The types of services pregnant women received are shown in Table 8.6. Among those women who had<br />

given birth to a child during the two years preceding the survey, 20% reported that a blood sample was<br />

taken during antenatal care visits, 35% reported that their blood pressure was checked, and 24%<br />

reported that a urine specimen was taken. Overall, only 12% of pregnant women had antenatal care<br />

visits where their blood pressure was measured, and urine and blood tested. Pregnant women living in<br />

urban areas are more likely to receive the standard recommended antenatal care (25%) than those living<br />

in rural areas (9%). In the Central region, one in four pregnant women is likely to receive standard<br />

antenatal care, while women living in the Northern region receive the standard recommended antenatal<br />

care the least (5%). The percentage who received standard care is lowest among pregnant women in<br />

the poorest wealth quintile (6%) and among those without education (10%).<br />

Assistance at Delivery<br />

Three quarters of all maternal deaths occur during delivery and the immediate post-partum period. The<br />

single most critical intervention for safe motherhood is to ensure a competent health worker with<br />
