The percentage of children entering first grade who eventually reach the last grade of primary
school (primary survival rate) is presented in Table 10.6. The last grade of primary school in
Afghanistan is Grade Six. Of all children starting Grade One, more than four in five (84%)
eventually reach the last grade. Note that this number includes children that repeat grades and
that eventually move up to reach the last grade. Compared with primary NAR, it can be
concluded that the majority of primary school age children who enrol in primary school are
likely to remain in school until the last grade of primary school. There are no dramatic
differences in the survival rates among girls and boys, or between rural (85%) and urban areas
(83%). There is, however, some difference in the survival rate among children whose mothers
have no education (85%) compared to the children of mothers with primary education (90%) or
secondary education (90%).
