Solid Fuel Use
More than three billion people around the world rely on solid fuels (biomass and coal) for
their basic energy needs, including cooking and heating. Cooking and heating with solid fuels
leads to high levels of indoor smoke, which is a complex mix of health-damaging pollutants.
The main problem with the use of solid fuels is products of incomplete combustion,
including CO, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, SO 2 , and other toxic elements. Use of solid fuels
increases the risks of acute respiratory illness, pneumonia, chronic obstructive lung disease,
cancer, and possibly tuberculosis, low birth weight, cataracts, and asthma. The primary
indicator of solid fuel use is the proportion of the population using solid fuels as the primary
source of domestic energy for cooking.
Table 6.10 shows the percentage of household members according to the type of cooking
fuel used by the household, and the percentage of household members living in households
using solid fuels for cooking.
