Characteristics of Female Respondents 15-49 Years
Tables 3.3 and 3.4 provide information on the background characteristics of female respondents
aged 15-49 years and of children under age five. In both tables, the total numbers of weighted
and unweighted observations are equal, since sample weights have been normalized
(standardized). In addition to providing useful information on the background characteristics of
women and children, the tables are also intended to show the numbers of observations in each
background category. These categories are used in subsequent tabulations found in this report.
Table 3.3 provides background characteristics of female respondents 15-49 years of age. The
table includes information on the distribution of women according to region, residence, age,
marital status, motherhood status, births in the last two years, education 6 , and wealth index
quintiles.
Principal components analysis was performed by using information on the ownership of
consumer goods, dwelling characteristics, water and sanitation, and other characteristics that
are related to the household s wealth to assign weights (factor scores) to each of the household
assets. Each household was then assigned a wealth score based on these weights and the assets
owned by that household. The survey household population was then ranked according to the
wealth score of the household they are living in, and was finally divided into five equal parts
(quintiles) from lowest (poorest) to highest (wealthiest). The assets used in these calculations
