In Afghanistan, the Universal Salt Iodization (USI) program was initiated in 2003 through public
and private partnerships. The overall objective of the program is to achieve the elimination of
IDD, by ensuring that 90% of households in Afghanistan have access to and consume adequately
quality iodized salt by 2015 or sooner. In-country capacity to produce iodized salt, social
mobilization and communication to promote the use of iodized salt, the creation of an enabling
environment, and the establishment of a surveillance system are the major strategies that have
been implemented to increase access and consumption of iodized salt at the household level in
Afghanistan.
