In the <strong>AMICS</strong>, the mothers/caretakers of all children under age five were asked about the<br />

number of children s books or picture books they have for the child, household objects or<br />

outside objects, and homemade toys, or toys in the home that came from a shop.<br />

In Afghanistan, only 2% of children aged 0-59 months are living in households where at least<br />

three children s books are present (Table 9.3). The proportion of children with 10 or more<br />

books declines to almost 0%. While no gender variances are observed, urban children (5%)<br />

appear to have more access to children s books than children living in rural households<br />

(2%).<br />
