ELEG4943 Digital Systems Design (Irregular) Number systems and codes, fundamentals<br />

<strong>of</strong> switching algebra, analysis and design <strong>of</strong> sequential switching circuits and memory<br />

ELEG4963 Field Programmable Gate Array Laboratory (Irregular) Field<br />

Programmable logic devices (FPGAs/CPLDs) have become extremely popular as basic building<br />

blocks for digital systems. They <strong>of</strong>fer a general architecture that users can customize by<br />

inducing permanent or reversible physical changes. This course will deal with the implementation<br />

<strong>of</strong> logic options using these devices. Corequisite: Lab component. Prerequisite: ELEG<br />

ELEG4983 Introduction to Computer Architecture (Irregular) Design <strong>of</strong> a single<br />

ELEG5163 Advanced Microcontroller Design Project (Irregular) Use <strong>of</strong> development<br />

systems as an aid to microcontroller design; the student is expected to design, build,<br />

ELEG5193L Advanced DSP Processors Laboratory (Irregular) Familiarization<br />

with, and use <strong>of</strong>, advanced DSP processors. Parallel processor configurations, timing consideration,<br />

specialized programming techniques, and complex pipelines. Prerequisite: ELEG<br />

ELEG5213 Integrated Circuit Fabrication Technology (Irregular) Theory<br />

and techniques <strong>of</strong> integrated circuit fabrication technology; crystal growth, chemical vapor<br />

deposition, impurity diffusion, oxidation, ion implantation, photolithography and medullization.<br />

Design and analysis <strong>of</strong> device fabrication using SUPREM and SEDAN. In-process analysis<br />

techniques. Student review papers and presentations on state <strong>of</strong> the art fabrication and device<br />

technology. Prerequisite: ELEG 4203.<br />

ELEG5233 Solid-State Electronics I (Irregular) Theoretical treatment <strong>of</strong> crystal<br />

structures and lattices, quantum and statistical mechanics, thermal properties <strong>of</strong> crystals, freeelectron<br />

theory <strong>of</strong> metals and quantum theory <strong>of</strong> electrons in periodic lattices. Prerequisite:<br />

ELEG 4203 and PHYS 3614 and PHYS 3611L.<br />

ELEG5243L Microelectronic Fabrication Techniques and Procedures (Sp,<br />

Fa) The Thin-Film Fabrication course is designed to prepare students to use the thin-film<br />

equipment and processes available at the Engineering Research Center’s thin-film cleanroom.<br />

The process modules to be trained on include lithography, metal deposition and etching,<br />

oxide deposition, growth and etching, reactive dry etching, tantalum anodization, photodefinable<br />

spin-on dielectric and electroplating. The related metrology modules include microscope<br />

inspection, spectrophotometric measurement <strong>of</strong> oxide, pr<strong>of</strong>ilometry and four-point probe measurements.<br />

Prerequisite: ELEG 5273.<br />

ELEG5253L Integrated Circuit Design Laboratory I (Irregular) Design and layout<br />

<strong>of</strong> large scale digital integrated circuits. Students design, check, and simulate digital integrated<br />

circuits which will be fabricated and tested in I.C. Design Laboratory II. Topics include<br />

computer-aided design, more indepth coverage <strong>of</strong> topics from ELEG 4233, and design <strong>of</strong> very<br />

large scale chips. Prerequisite: ELEG 4233 and ELEG 4203.<br />

ELEG5263L Integrated Circuit Design Laboratory II (Irregular) Students test<br />

the I.C. chips they designed in I.C. Design Laboratory I and propose design corrections where<br />

needed. Topics include gate arrays, bipolar design, I2L, memory design, and microprocessor<br />

design. Prerequisite: ELEG 5253L.<br />

ELEG5273 Electronic Packaging (Irregular) An introductory treatment <strong>of</strong> electronic<br />

packaging, from single chip to multichip, including materials, substrates, electrical design, thermal<br />

design, mechanical design, package modeling and simulation, and processing considerations.<br />

Credit can not be earned for both MEEG 5273 and ELEG 5273. Prerequisite: (ELEG<br />

3213 or ELEG 3913) and MATH 3404. (Same as MEEG 5273)<br />

ELEG5283 Mixed Signal Test Engineering II (Irregular) Focus calibrations,<br />

DAC testing, ADC testing, DIB design, Design for Test, Data Analysis, and Test Economics.<br />

ELEG5293L Integrated Circuits Fabrication Laboratory (Irregular)<br />

Experimental studies <strong>of</strong> silicon oxidation, solid-state diffusion, photolithographical materials<br />

and techniques, bonding and encapsulation. Fabrication and testing <strong>of</strong> PN diodes, NPN transistors<br />

and MOS transistors. Prerequisite: ELEG 5213.<br />

ELEG5313 Power Semiconductor Devices (Irregular) Carrier transport physics;<br />

breakdown phenomenon in semiconductor devices; power bipolar transistors, thyristors, power<br />

junction field-effect transistors, power field-controlled diodes, power metal-oxide-semiconductor<br />

field-effect transistors, and power MOS-bipolar devices. Prerequisite: ELEG 4203.<br />

ELEG5323 Semiconductor Nanostructures I (Irregular) This course is focused<br />

on the basic theoretical and experimental analyses <strong>of</strong> low dimensional systems encountered in<br />

semiconductor heterojunctions and nanostructures with the emphasis on device applications<br />

and innovations. Prerequisite: ELEG 4203 or Instructor Permission.<br />

ELEG5333 Semiconductor Nanostructures II (Irregular) This course is a continuation<br />

<strong>of</strong> ELEG 5323 Semiconductors Nanostructures I. It is focused on the transport properties,<br />

growth, electrical and optical properties <strong>of</strong> semiconductor nanostructures, and optoelectronic<br />

devices. Prerequisite: ELEG 5323 or Instructor Permission.<br />

ELEG5403 Systems Theory (Irregular) A unified state-space approach to continuous<br />

and discrete systems. System dynamics, local transition functions, reachability, observability,<br />

and global behavior <strong>of</strong> systems. Prerequisite: ELEG 4403.<br />

ELEG5413 Stochastic Control Systems (Irregular) Optimal estimation and control<br />

<strong>of</strong> linear dynamic systems with uncertainties. Stochastic processes and models. Prediction,<br />

filtering, and smoothing. The Kalman filter, Wiener-Hopf equations, separation principle, and<br />

stochastic optimal control. Prerequisite: ELEG 4133.<br />

ELEG5423 Optimal Control Systems (Irregular) Basic concepts, conditions for<br />

optimality, the minimum principle, the Hamilton Jacobi equation, structure and properties <strong>of</strong><br />

ELEG5433 Digital Control Systems (Irregular) Signal processing in continuous-discrete<br />

systems. System modeling using the z-transform and state-variable techniques. Analysis<br />

ELEG5443 Nonlinear Systems Analysis and Control (Irregular) Second-order<br />

nonlinear systems. Nonlinear differential equations. Approximate analysis methods. Lyapunov<br />

and input-output stability. Design <strong>of</strong> controllers, observers, and estimators for nonlinear systems.<br />

Prerequisite: ELEG 4403 or MATH 5303.<br />

ELEG5453 Adaptive Filtering and Control (Irregular) Models for deterministic<br />

systems. Parameter estimation. Adaptive control. Stochastic models. Stochastic state and<br />

parameter estimation. Adaptive control <strong>of</strong> stochastic systems. Prerequisite: ELEG 3143 and<br />

ELEG 4403.<br />

ELEG5463 Chaotic Dynamical Systems (Irregular) Computer analysis <strong>of</strong> fixed and<br />

periodic orbits and bifurcations. Symbolic dynamics approach to chaotic systems with applications<br />

to convergence analysis <strong>of</strong> numerical algorithms and secure communications. Fractals<br />

with applications to image compression. Julia and Mandelbrot sets. Prerequisite: senior or<br />

graduate standing in Engineering, Math or Science.<br />

ELEG5473 Intelligent Transportation Systems (Irregular) Engineering challenges<br />

in current surface transportation. The ITS concept. Review <strong>of</strong> current electrical, communication,<br />

and computer technologies. Applications to traffic surveillence, traveler information, traffic<br />

management, transit management, incident management, automatic toll collection and smart<br />

cars. Benefits to ITS. Prerequisite: senior or graduate standing in engineering.<br />

ELEG5513 Electric Power Quality (Irregular) The theory and analysis <strong>of</strong> electric<br />

power quality for industrial and commercial power systems. Specific topics include: grounding,<br />

shielding, wiring considerations, instrumentation, site surveys and analysis, case studies,<br />

specification and selection <strong>of</strong> power system components, and recommended design and<br />

installation practice. Prerequisite: ELEG 3303 and MATH 3404.<br />

ELEG5533 Power Electronics and Motor Drives (Irregular) V-1 characteristics<br />

<strong>of</strong> insulated Gate Bipolar Transistors (IGBTs) and MOS-controlled Thyristors (MCTs), design<br />

<strong>of</strong> driver and snubber circuits, induction-, permanent magnet-, and brushless dc-motor drives;<br />

ELEG5543 Communication Networks for Motion/Industrial Control<br />

ELEG5603 Wireless Data Communications (Irregular) Comprehensive course<br />

in the emerging field <strong>of</strong> wireless data communications. Focused on upper layer protocols for<br />

wireless data transmission. Topics include wireless cellular system infrastructures, wireless<br />

circuit data, wireless packet data, mobile IP, and various existing and soon-to-be available<br />

wireless data systems and technologies. Prerequisite: graduate standing.<br />

ELEG5613 Introduction to Telecommunications (Irregular) Overview <strong>of</strong> public<br />
