The <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong>: Departments and Course Descriptions<br />

Thesis Option: (30 hours) Twenty-four hours <strong>of</strong> graduate-level<br />

coursework, including:<br />

12 hours <strong>of</strong> transportation engineering topics<br />

3 hours <strong>of</strong> an approved course from Marketing and Logistics<br />

3 hours <strong>of</strong> an approved course in statistics or quality management<br />

6 hours <strong>of</strong> thesis research<br />

Non-Thesis Option: (33 hours). Thirty hours <strong>of</strong> graduate-level<br />

coursework, including:<br />

15 hours <strong>of</strong> transportation engineering topics<br />

3 hours <strong>of</strong> an approved course from Marketing and Logistics<br />

3 hours <strong>of</strong> an approved course in statistics or quality management<br />

3 hours <strong>of</strong> independent study resulting in a written Master’s Report.<br />

<strong>Graduate</strong>s must present a cumulative grade-point average <strong>of</strong> no<br />

less than 3.00 on all graduate courses and a cumulative grade-point<br />

average <strong>of</strong> no less than 2.70 on all courses that are prerequisites to<br />

acceptance into the program. They also must pass a final examination<br />

administered and graded by the candidate’s major adviser and<br />

graduate study committee. The examination is to be comprehensive<br />

and will include either a defense <strong>of</strong> the candidate’s thesis or a presentation<br />

and discussion <strong>of</strong> the candidate’s Master’s Report. The examination<br />

may be oral, written, or a combination <strong>of</strong> both.<br />

M.A.T. (VOED) (Note: This program is being discontinued. No<br />

student will be allowed admission to the program after August 2007.)<br />

The Master <strong>of</strong> Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) is a degree program <strong>of</strong><br />

33 semester hours. The M.A.T. degree is the vocational teacher education<br />

program for students at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arkansas</strong>.<br />

Areas <strong>of</strong> Concentration for the M.A.T.: Childhood education,<br />

physical education, secondary education, and vocational education.<br />

Prerequisites to the M.A.T. Degree Program: Students will be<br />

selected up to the maximum number designated for each cohort area<br />

<strong>of</strong> emphasis.<br />

Requirements for admission to the M.A.T. degree program for<br />

initial certification:<br />

1. Completion <strong>of</strong> an appropriate undergraduate degree program<br />

2. Cumulative GPA <strong>of</strong> 2.70 in all courses completed prior to<br />

receipt <strong>of</strong> a bachelor’s degree program<br />

3. Admission to the <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong><br />

4. Admission to Teacher Education Program<br />

5. Completion <strong>of</strong> the pre-education core with a minimum <strong>of</strong> “C”<br />

in all courses<br />

6. Completion <strong>of</strong> all prerequisite courses in teaching field<br />

7. Payment <strong>of</strong> internship fee<br />

Requirements for the Master <strong>of</strong> Arts<br />

in Teaching Degree: minimum 33 hours.<br />

study <strong>of</strong> issues, problems, and challenges pertaining to the goals, objectives, organization,<br />

and curriculum <strong>of</strong> the vocational education program.<br />

VAED6133 Instructional Management in Vocational and Adult Education<br />

(Sp, Su, Fa) An analysis <strong>of</strong> designing and managing vocational and adult instructional programs<br />

with competency developing in directing curriculum development, improving instruction,<br />

formulating schedules, and installing competency-based education.<br />

VAED6143 Student Services in Vocational and Adult Education (Sp, Su,<br />

Fa) A comprehensive course which includes managing student recruitment and admissions,<br />

providing systematic counseling and guidance services, maintaining overall school discipline,<br />

establishing a student placement service, and coordinating follow-up studies.<br />

VAED6213 Curriculum Development in Vocational and Adult Education (Sp,<br />

Su, Fa) Determining principles <strong>of</strong> curriculum development, organizing curricula, and evaluating<br />

curriculum materials with special reference to vocational and adult education.<br />

VAED6303 Program Planning and Evaluation in Vocational and Adult<br />

Education (Sp, Su, Fa) Emphasis is given to understanding the theoretical foundation<br />

upon which the programming process is predicated, developing a theoretical mode, and<br />

acquiring the conceptual tools necessary for analyzing the programming process in any vocational<br />

or adult education organization.<br />

VAED6403 Special Topics in Human Resource Development (Sp, Su, Fa)<br />

Designed for persons interested in exploring topics specific to vocational and adult education<br />

and human resource development in business and industry settings. Emphasis given to examining<br />

vocational and adult education research as applied in the public and private sector.<br />
