Critical analysis <strong>of</strong> major theoretical perspectives in counseling, including both group and individual<br />

Prerequisite: CNED Doctoral Standing or Permission.<br />
CNED6023 Foundations <strong>of</strong> Marriage and Family Counseling Therapy (Su)<br />
Comprehensive exploration <strong>of</strong> the current theories/techniques <strong>of</strong> marriage, family and couples<br />
counseling. Prerequisite: CNED 5323 and CNED 5333 and CNED Doctoral or Masters<br />

CNED6033 Advanced Group Theory and Methods (Odd years, Sp)<br />
Comparative study <strong>of</strong> theories and processes <strong>of</strong> group counseling. Includes supervised experience<br />
in group facilitation with video recording and playback. Prerequisite: CNED 5363 or<br />
equivalent and CNED Doctoral Standing or Permission.<br />
CNED6043 Supervision <strong>of</strong> Counselors (Even years, Fa) Analysis, assessment,<br />
and practical application <strong>of</strong> counselor supervision techniques in treatment and training programs.<br />
Prerequisite: CNED Doctoral standing and CNED Faculty consent.<br />
CNED605V Independent Study (Sp, Su, Fa) (1-18) May be repeated for 18 hours.<br />
CNED6063 Counseling and Sexuality (Even years, Fa) Analysis <strong>of</strong> theory and<br />
practice in issues related to sexual dysphoria, sexuality, and sexual problems. Prerequisite:<br />
CNED 574 and CNED Doctoral standing or permission.<br />
CNED6073 Research in Counseling (Odd years, Sp) Review and analysis <strong>of</strong><br />
research in counseling. Prerequisite: CNED Doctoral standing or permission.<br />
CNED6083 Consultation Theory and Methods (Su) Strategies, practical application,<br />
and techniques for effective consultation with parents, teachers, and community agencies.<br />
Prerequisite: CNED 5333 (preferred) CNED Doctoral or Masters standing or permission.<br />
CNED6093 Counseling Children and Adolescents (Sp) Introduction to counseling<br />
children and adolescents including the process, theories, techniques, and materials applicable<br />
to children and adolescents in a pluralistic society. Prerequisite: CNED 5323 and CNED<br />
5333 and CNED Doctoral or Masters standing or permission.<br />
CNED6123 Clinical Applications <strong>of</strong> Marriage and Family Counseling and<br />
Therapy (Odd years, Fa) Advanced clinical methodology appropriate for family counseling,<br />
marriage counseling, and couples counseling( in all settings), with emphasis on solution-focused<br />
systems, Satir model and psychoeducational family work in schools. Includes<br />
supervision <strong>of</strong> clinical experience in marriage, family and couples counseling, video recording<br />
and school/community outreach. Prerequisite: CNED 6203 and CNED Doctoral standing or<br />
Permission.<br />
CNED6413 Advanced Individual Appraisal (Odd years, Fa) To provide advanced<br />
knowledge and experience with those psychoeducational instruments and procedures used in<br />
conducting school related assessment. Prerequisite: CNED 5303 and CNED 5413 or equivalent<br />
and CNED Doctoral standing or permission.<br />
CNED6523 Gender Issues in Counseling and Human Development (Even<br />
years, Sp) A study <strong>of</strong> gender and sex role issues pertinent to the counseling pr<strong>of</strong>ession,<br />
and their effect on the development <strong>of</strong> children, adults, and young and older adults. Students<br />
utilize Gender Fair Guidelines for counseling as presented by the American Counseling<br />
Association. Prerequisite: CNED 5203 and CNED Doctoral standing or permission.<br />
CNED6711 Advanced Counseling Practicum (Sp) Suervised counseling practice.<br />
A 100-clock hour approved practical counseling experience. Prerequisite: CNED Doctoral<br />
Standing. Permission <strong>of</strong> CNED Faculty and Clinical Coordinator. May be repeated for 3 hours.<br />
CNED674V Internship (Sp, Su, Fa) (1-18) Supervised field placement (Clinical/<br />
Instructorship/Supervision/Research). Prerequisite: CNED Doctoral Standing, CNED Faculty<br />

Degree Conferred:<br />
M.F.A. (CRWR)<br />
The program leading to the degree <strong>of</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Fine Arts in<br />
Creative Writing provides graduate level training in creative writing<br />
and in the study <strong>of</strong> literature.<br />
Required Courses: A minimum <strong>of</strong> 42 hours for a candidate with<br />
an M.A. degree in English or <strong>of</strong> 60 hours for a candidate with no<br />
M.A. Candidates with a B.A. degree that does not include a major in<br />
English may be required to take additional courses.<br />
1. Writing and Theory Courses<br />
a. Writing Workshop (15 to 24 semester hours)<br />
b. Form and Theory <strong>of</strong> Fiction or Poetry (9 hours total:<br />
6 hours in student’s genre; 3 hours in second genre)<br />
c. Contemporary Fiction and Poetry (6 hours in student’s genre;<br />
3 hours in second genre)<br />
d. Readings in Modern or Contemporary Literature (6 hours)<br />
2. Additional Courses, 12–24 hours <strong>of</strong> English at the advanced level.<br />
Comprehensive Examination: A written examination covering<br />
critical terms, theories, and readings in the candidate’s genre.<br />
Thesis: An M.F.A. thesis may be either a collection <strong>of</strong> poems or<br />
stories or a novel. It should be <strong>of</strong> the quality <strong>of</strong> those works currently<br />
published by national magazines, by literary journals, and by legitimate<br />
book publishers. The degree will be withheld from any student<br />
failing to produce a suitable body <strong>of</strong> work.<br />
Three hours <strong>of</strong> credit may be given for a thesis, or six hours <strong>of</strong><br />
credit to a candidate who has 21 hours <strong>of</strong> workshop or less.<br />
Final Examination: A one-hour oral examination on the thesis.<br />
All students working toward the degree will plan their specific<br />
programs in consultation with their advisers. All degree requirements<br />
must be completed within six consecutive calendar years from the<br />
date <strong>of</strong> first enrollment.<br />
