Requirements for the Educational Specialist Degree: (Minimum<br />

60 hours.) This program is designed for curriculum and instruction<br />

directors, supervisors, department heads, and career teachers<br />

interested in secondary curriculum and instruction. Flexibility exists<br />

in planning the 60-hour minimum program to take into account the<br />

occupational needs and pr<strong>of</strong>essional aspirations <strong>of</strong> each student.<br />

For instance, the continued study <strong>of</strong> secondary education may be<br />

combined with a component <strong>of</strong> educational technology, reading, or<br />

special education. In addition, each student must complete a research<br />

course (EDFD 5013 Research Methods in Education or EDFD 5393<br />

Statistics in Education and Health Pr<strong>of</strong>essions) and a project, and a<br />

minimum <strong>of</strong> nine graduate hours <strong>of</strong> cognate courses.<br />

Masters <strong>of</strong> Social Work (MSW)<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essional social workers promote human well-being by<br />

strengthening opportunities, resources, and capacities <strong>of</strong> people in<br />

their environments and by creating policies and services to correct<br />

conditions that limit human rights and the quality <strong>of</strong> life. The<br />

social work pr<strong>of</strong>ession works to eliminate poverty, discrimination,<br />

and oppression. Guided by a person-in-environment perspective and<br />

respect for human diversity, the pr<strong>of</strong>ession works to effect social and<br />

economic justice worldwide. The purpose <strong>of</strong> the graduate social work<br />

program at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arkansas</strong> is to prepare advanced-level<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional social workers as leader/practitioners with the capacity<br />

to address complex personal, social, community, and economic problems<br />

preventing so many <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arkansas</strong>’ people (and people across the<br />

country and globally) from moving out <strong>of</strong> poverty to self-sufficiency.<br />

The MSW program is accredited by the Council on Social Work<br />

Education (CSWE).<br />

Areas <strong>of</strong> Concentration: The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arkansas</strong> MSW program<br />

<strong>of</strong>fers a life-course multi-system concentration supported by<br />

an area <strong>of</strong> emphasis chosen by each student from this list: Children,<br />

Youth, and Families; Management, Administration and Supervision;<br />

Aging; Health; or Mental Health. The life-course multi-system perspective<br />

prepares students for advanced social work practice with a<br />

range <strong>of</strong> systems (individuals, families, groups, organizations, and<br />

communities) and for practice with individuals across the life course<br />

as they interact with multiple systems.<br />

Primary Areas <strong>of</strong> Faculty Research: End <strong>of</strong> life care; spirituality<br />

in social work; human behavior and the social environment theory;<br />

gerontology; addictions; health and health disparities; poverty reduction;<br />

human diversity; international social work; social work history;<br />

women and assets development; children and families.<br />

Admission Requirements: Admission to the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Arkansas</strong> <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> as well as admission to the <strong>School</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Social Work MSW program is required. Admission requirements<br />

for the MSW program include: a baccalaureate degree with a liberal<br />

arts perspective from an accredited college or university (<strong>of</strong>ficial<br />

transcripts must be provided); competitive GRE or MAT scores; a<br />

minimum 3.00 undergraduate GPA on a four-point scale; 2.75 for<br />

conditional admission; a personal statement <strong>of</strong> motivation for and<br />

experiences supporting admission to the MSW program; three pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

reference letters (faculty, employers, supervisors); a basic<br />

statistics course; and computer literacy demonstrated through prior<br />

course work. In addition to the above requirements, for admission to<br />

the Advanced Standing program, applicants must have a bachelor’s<br />

degree in social work, received during the past six years, from a<br />

school accredited by the Council on Social Work Education.<br />

Two-year Program Option: This option is required for students<br />

without a baccalaureate degree from a program accredited by the<br />

Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Students in the twoyear<br />

option take a total <strong>of</strong> 63 credit hours. The following are required<br />

Foundation courses: SCWK 4073, 4093, 4103, 4153, 4333, 4343,<br />

4733, 5003, 5412, 5434. The following are required Advanced<br />

courses: SCWK 5073, 6000L, 6003, 6013, 6073, 6442, 6444, 6452,<br />

and 6454.<br />

Advanced Standing Option: Students with a baccalaureate<br />

degree from a program accredited by CSWE are eligible to apply for<br />

Advanced Standing. This option requires a total <strong>of</strong> 42 credit hours<br />

including SCWK 5013, 5442, 5444, and the advanced course work<br />

listed above for the two-year option.<br />

Area <strong>of</strong> Emphasis Electives: Each student is required to develop<br />
