M.S. (STAT)<br />
The Master <strong>of</strong> Science degree program in statistics is intended<br />
to provide training for a pr<strong>of</strong>essional career, principally in applied<br />
statistics. Toward this end, students with degrees other than in mathematics,<br />
as well as mathematics majors, are encouraged to apply for<br />
admission. Requirements for this degree may be satisfied by completing<br />
the Statistics, Biometry, or Educational Statistics concentration.<br />
A suggested outline <strong>of</strong> course work may be obtained by contacting<br />
the Chair <strong>of</strong> <strong>Studies</strong>.<br />
Requirements for the Master <strong>of</strong> Science Degree:<br />
Statistics Concentration: A candidate must complete a minimum<br />
<strong>of</strong> 30 hours <strong>of</strong> graduate credits that must include the following: STAT<br />
4001L and STAT 4003 or STAT 4033, STAT 4373, STAT 5103, STAT<br />
5113, STAT 5313, STAT 5333, STAT 5343, STAT 5353, STAT 5383<br />
and STAT 610V (3), in addition to MATH 4363. CSCE 1023/1021L,<br />
MATH 3083, and MATH 4513 or MATH 3423 (or their equivalent)<br />
are prerequisites and otherwise will be considered as deficiencies.<br />
Biometry Concentration: A candidate must complete a minimum<br />
<strong>of</strong> 36 graduate credits that must include the following: STAT 4001L<br />
(or AGST 4011), STAT 4003 (or AGST 4023), STAT 4373 (or AGST<br />
5014), STAT 5103, STAT 5113, STAT 5313, STAT 5333, and STAT<br />
5353, and AGST 5803, AGST 5901, and AGST 5913. MATH 2574<br />
and MATH 3083, or their equivalents, are prerequisites and otherwise<br />
will be considered as deficiencies.<br />
Educational Statistics Concentration: A candidate must complete<br />
a minimum <strong>of</strong> 30 graduate credits that must include the following:<br />
STAT 4001L and STAT 4003 (or EDFD 6403), STAT 4373 (or<br />
EDFD 6413), STAT 5103, STAT 5113, STAT 5313, STAT 5333, and<br />
STAT 5353, EDFD 6653, and 6 hours <strong>of</strong> EDFD 699V. MATH 2574<br />
and MATH 3083, or their equivalents, are prerequisites and otherwise<br />
will be considered as deficiencies.<br />

Statistics (STAT)<br />
STAT4001L Statistics Methods Laboratory (Sp, Fa) Emphasis on use <strong>of</strong> integrated<br />
statistical packages to complement statistical methodology being covered concurrently<br />
in STAT 4003. Corequisite: STAT 4003.<br />
STAT4003 Statistical Methods (Sp, Fa) Concepts <strong>of</strong> probability, sampling, regression,<br />
and experimental design. Corequisite: STAT 4001L. Prerequisite: MATH 2554.<br />
STAT4033 Nonparametric Statistical Methods (Sp, Su, Fa) Chi square tests.<br />
Kolmogorov-Smirnov goodness-<strong>of</strong>-fit tests, the Mann-Whitney and Wilcoxon 2-sampling tests,<br />
and various nonparametric measures <strong>of</strong> association. Prerequisite: MATH 1203 and junior<br />
standing.<br />
STAT4043 Sampling Techniques (Sp, Su, Fa) Considers optimum techniques <strong>of</strong><br />
simple random, stratified random, cluster, systematic and multistage sampling from finite<br />
populations subject to cost precision constraints. Wide range <strong>of</strong> application. Prerequisite: STAT<br />
4003.<br />
STAT4373 Experimental Design (Sp) Topics in the design and analysis <strong>of</strong> planned<br />
experiments, including randomized block, Latin square, split plot, and BIB designs, use <strong>of</strong> fractional<br />
factorial replication, and repeated measures. Prerequisite: STAT 4003.<br />
STAT5103 Theory <strong>of</strong> Statistics (Fa) Fundamentals <strong>of</strong> probability, distribution theory,<br />
and random variables; expected value, moments, and generating functions; classic parametric<br />
families <strong>of</strong> distributions; central limit theorems, inequalities, and laws <strong>of</strong> large numbers.<br />
Prerequisite: MATH 2574.<br />
STAT5113 Statistical Inference (Sp) Statistical theory <strong>of</strong> estimation and testing<br />
hypothesis. Prerequisite: STAT 5103.<br />
STAT5313 Regression Analysis I (Sp) Matrix formulation <strong>of</strong> least squares and multiple<br />
regression models. Estimability and use <strong>of</strong> the generalized inverse in analysis <strong>of</strong> variance<br />
and covariance models <strong>of</strong> less than full rank. Computational aspects are emphasized.<br />
STAT5322 Statistical Packages (Sp, Fa) Emphasis on use <strong>of</strong> digital computer to<br />
perform statistical data analysis through the use <strong>of</strong> integrated statistical packages. Instruction<br />
includes use <strong>of</strong> the SAS, SPSS, and BMD packages. Data management operations as well as<br />
formal statistical procedures such as ANOVA and regression are considered. Prerequisite: 3<br />
hours <strong>of</strong> statistics.<br />
STAT5333 Analysis <strong>of</strong> Categorical Responses (Sp) A modern treatment, including<br />
extensions <strong>of</strong> classical probit analysis, multivariate logistic models, GSK model, loglinear<br />
models in analysis <strong>of</strong> multiway contingency tables, and nonmetric multidimensional scaling.<br />
Prerequisite: STAT 5313.<br />
STAT5343 Stochastic Processes (Sp, Su, Fa) Markov chains, branching processes,<br />
birth-death processes, queuing theory with application. Prerequisite: STAT 5103.<br />
STAT5353 Methods <strong>of</strong> Multivariate Analysis II (Sp) Hotelling’s T2 procedures,<br />
multivariate analysis <strong>of</strong> variance, discriminant function analysis and problems <strong>of</strong> classification,<br />
multidimensional scaling, and cluster analysis. Prerequisite: STAT 5313.<br />
STAT5383 Time Series Analysis (Sp, Su, Fa) Identification, estimation and forecasting<br />
<strong>of</strong> time series. Spectral analysis including the fast Fourier transform computational aspects<br />
are emphasized. Prerequisite: STAT 5103.<br />
STAT5413 Spatial Statistics (Fa) Applied spatial statistics, covering univariate spatial modeling<br />
(kriging), multivariate spatial modeling (cokriging), methods <strong>of</strong> estimation and inference, and<br />
spatial sampling designs. Special relevance to remote sensing. Prerequisite: STAT 5313.<br />
STAT610V Research in Statistics (Irregular) (1-4) Prerequisite: graduate standing.<br />
STAT639V Topics in Statistics (Irregular) (1-3) Current state <strong>of</strong> the art on methodology<br />
in one <strong>of</strong> the topics: multivariate analysis, time series analysis, sequential analysis, factor<br />
analysis, or biostatistics. May be repeated.<br />

M.F.A. (TRAN)<br />
Requirements for M.F.A. in Translation: Candidate must demonstrate<br />
a satisfactory knowledge <strong>of</strong> two foreign languages. The candidate<br />
must take a minimum <strong>of</strong> 60 graduate hours. A candidate who<br />
already holds a graduate degree may be able to complete the program<br />
with 42 hours; a candidate who does not have at least a minor in<br />
English may be required to take additional courses.<br />

Twenty-four hours chosen from the literature <strong>of</strong> foreign languages,<br />
including at least 6 hours from each <strong>of</strong> the candidate’s source languages.<br />
Teaching assistants may substitute ENGL 5003 Composition<br />
Pedagogy or FLAN 5063 Teaching Foreign Languages at the College<br />
Level for literature courses in a foreign language. Candidates without<br />
previous history <strong>of</strong> English or Latin courses must substitute ENGL<br />
6193 or LATN 3063.<br />
There will also be a thesis consisting <strong>of</strong> a translated collection <strong>of</strong><br />
poems and/or stories or a translated novel, epic, or drama, as well as<br />
comprehensive written and oral examinations. A student must register<br />
for a minimum <strong>of</strong> six hours <strong>of</strong> M.F.A. thesis.<br />
All degree requirements must be completed within six consecutive<br />
calendar years from the date <strong>of</strong> first enrollment.<br />
Other Requirements: The policies and procedures approved for<br />
the Master <strong>of</strong> Arts and the Master <strong>of</strong> Science degrees also apply<br />
to the Master <strong>of</strong> Fine Arts degree. In addition to completing other<br />
requirements, the candidate must pass a comprehensive examination<br />
administered by the respective program area.<br />
