The <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong>: Departments and Course Descriptions<br />

accepted by the Rehabilitation Education faculty. The review process<br />

consists <strong>of</strong> an interview and evaluation <strong>of</strong> the applicant’s personal,<br />

social, and academic attributes, and includes three letters <strong>of</strong> reference.<br />

A prospective candidate must present a graduate GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.50 or better<br />

and a score <strong>of</strong> at least 1500 on three parts <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Graduate</strong> Record<br />

Examinations (GRE). Additional prerequisites may be prescribed after<br />

review <strong>of</strong> the applicant’s materials.<br />

Requirements for the Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy Degree: A minimum<br />

<strong>of</strong> 60 semester hours, including 18 hours <strong>of</strong> dissertation, must<br />

be taken from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arkansas</strong> after admission into the<br />

Ph.D. program. A doctoral advisory committee will be established by<br />

the student, in consultation with the program chair, during the first<br />

semester <strong>of</strong> enrollment. The nature <strong>of</strong> the student’s program will vary<br />

depending on the student’s career objectives. The degree program<br />

also requires successful completion <strong>of</strong> candidacy examinations, an<br />

acceptable doctoral dissertation, and oral defense <strong>of</strong> the dissertation.<br />

These last requirements are described elsewhere in this catalog.<br />

A minimum <strong>of</strong> 15 hours approved by the doctoral advisory committee.<br />

Field <strong>of</strong> Study<br />

The student, in consultation with the doctoral advisory committee,<br />

will identify further course work comprising a field <strong>of</strong> study in<br />

rehabilitation.<br />

Rehabilitation Education (RHAB)<br />

RHAB5333 Counseling Persons Who Are Deaf or Hard <strong>of</strong> Hearing (Sp, Fa)<br />

Focuses on the application <strong>of</strong> basic principles underlying all forms <strong>of</strong> therapeutic interaction to<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional counseling practices with individuals who are deaf or hard <strong>of</strong> hearing.<br />

RHAB534V Supervised Rehabilitation Counseling (Sp, Su, Fa) (1-3) Gives the<br />

student practice in counseling under supervision with rehabilitation clients in selected settings<br />

and agencies.<br />

RHAB5353 Hearing Impairment and Human Behavior (Sp, Fa) Focuses on an<br />

interdisciplinary study <strong>of</strong> the impact for pr<strong>of</strong>ound hearing loss on the educational, psychological,<br />

social, and vocational functioning <strong>of</strong> persons who are deaf or hard <strong>of</strong> hearing.<br />

RHAB5363 Employer Relations and Placement Practicum (Sp, Su, Fa)<br />

Students address the placement needs <strong>of</strong> rehabilitation agencies and their clients by implementing<br />

the RehabMark approach to employer development. Prerequisite: RHAB 5493.<br />

RHAB5373 Multicultural/Gender Issues in Rehab (Su) This course examines<br />

multicultural and gender issues <strong>of</strong> importance to rehabilitation practice and research, including<br />

study <strong>of</strong> women and men with disabilities within different minority cultures. The course uses a<br />

power analysis and a minority model <strong>of</strong> disability as a basis for understanding the relationship<br />

between disability, gender, race and ethnicity.<br />

RHAB5403 Rehabilitation Counseling (Fa) Counseling theories and techniques<br />

applied to the rehabilitation counseling setting. Includes an experiential component with critical<br />

analyses.<br />

RHAB5413 Group Counseling in a Rehabilitation Setting (Su) This course<br />

combines theoretical and experiential components <strong>of</strong> group counseling in settings unique to<br />

the practice <strong>of</strong> rehabilitation counseling. Prerequisite: rehabilitation counseling or counseling<br />

theory.<br />

RHAB5423 Vocational Rehabilitation Foundations (Fa) Survey <strong>of</strong> the philosophy<br />

<strong>of</strong> vocational rehabilitation, including history and legislation.<br />

RHAB5433 Medical Aspects <strong>of</strong> Disability (Sp) Orientation to medical and medically<br />

related aspects <strong>of</strong> various disabling conditions with emphasis on the severely disabled.<br />

RHAB5443 Rehabilitation Case Management (Sp) Counseling process in the<br />

rehabilitation setting. Focusing upon effective counseling strategies, representative cases, and<br />

effective case management methods.<br />

RHAB5453 Psychological Aspects <strong>of</strong> Disability (Sp) Intensive study <strong>of</strong> the psychological<br />

aspects <strong>of</strong> adjustment to atypical physique and prolonged handicapping condition.<br />

(Same as RECR 5453)<br />

RHAB5463 Independent Living and Community Adjustment (Fa) Study <strong>of</strong> the<br />

problems and practices involved in developing and maintaining independent living rehabilitation<br />

programs for people who are disabled physically, developmentally, and mentally.<br />

RHAB5473 Placement <strong>of</strong> Persons with Disabilities (Su) Focuses on placement<br />

theory and practice as they apply to persons who experience disabilities. Special attention is<br />

given to RehabMark approach.<br />

RHAB5483 Rehabilitation Counseling Research (Fa) An indepth examination <strong>of</strong><br />

rehabilitation research methodology and issues to prepare students to critically evaluate and<br />

use rehabilitation counseling research in their pr<strong>of</strong>essional practice.<br />

RHAB5493 Vocational Evaluation and Adjustment (Sp) An indepth examination<br />

<strong>of</strong> theories and techniques related to evaluation <strong>of</strong> vocational potential and work adjustment <strong>of</strong><br />

people with disabilities.<br />

RHAB568V Rehabilitation Research (Sp, Su, Fa) (3-6) Practical experience under<br />

the supervision <strong>of</strong> a faculty member in conducting rehabilitation research in a laboratory or<br />

field setting.<br />

RHAB574V Internship (Sp, Su, Fa) (1-9)<br />

RHAB605V Independent Study (Sp, Su, Fa) (1-18)<br />

RHAB6203 Disability Policy in the U.S. (Fa) An analysis <strong>of</strong> public policy approaches<br />

to disability in the U.S. Examines the political and philosophical origins <strong>of</strong> disability policy;<br />

reviews major disability legislation and its effects on policy stakeholders; describes recent<br />

initiatives; and analyzes evolution <strong>of</strong> disability policy within context <strong>of</strong> changing societal, economic,<br />

and political conditions.<br />

RHAB6213 Advanced Psychosocial Aspects <strong>of</strong> Disability (Fa) A theoretical<br />

and applied study <strong>of</strong> techniques that enable people to cope with 2 major life events: disability<br />

and unemployment.<br />

RHAB6233 Employment Practices and Interventions (Sp) An intensive study <strong>of</strong><br />

the employment experiences <strong>of</strong> workers with disabilities with emphasis on disincentives and<br />

barriers to employment and interventions to enable people with disabilities to participate in<br />

employment. Prerequisite: RHAB 5493 or equivalent.<br />

RHAB6243 Advanced Rehabilitation Research (Sp) An advanced doctoral level<br />

course to facilitate the application <strong>of</strong> scientific values, research skills, and behavior to the generation<br />

<strong>of</strong> rehabilitation knowledge and problem solving.<br />

RHAB625V Teaching Internship in Rehabilitation (Sp, Su, Fa) (1-18) <strong>Graduate</strong><br />

teaching experience in the rehabilitation counseling curriculum. Under the supervision <strong>of</strong> a faculty<br />

member, will participate in the development <strong>of</strong> syllabi, course materials and examinations.<br />

Will team teach graduate rehabilitation courses with the faculty member. May be repeated for<br />

18 hours.<br />

RHAB626V Practicum Supervision (Su) (1-6) (Formerly RHAB 6263) The study<br />

and practice <strong>of</strong> supervising master’s rehabilitation counseling students in a clinical practicum<br />

setting. Prerequisite: doctoral standing. May be repeated for 3 hours.<br />

RHAB6273 Administration & Supervision in Rehabilitation Settings (Odd<br />

years, Fa) An examination <strong>of</strong> the basic knowledge and skills required to perform supervisory<br />

and administrative functions in rehabilitation settings. Includes a review <strong>of</strong> applicable<br />

laws, management theory, issues in human resource development, burnout, and exposure to<br />

organizational structure and function. Prerequisite: master’s or doctoral standing.<br />

RHAB675V Internship (Sp, Su, Fa) (1-18) Advanced supervised practice in a rehabilitation<br />

setting.<br />

RHAB699V Seminar (Sp, Su, Fa) (1-18) Discussion <strong>of</strong> pertinent topics and issues<br />

in the rehabilitation field. Prerequisite: advanced graduate standing. May be repeated for 18<br />

hours.<br />
