The <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong>: Departments and Course Descriptions<br />

Areas <strong>of</strong> Concentration: French, German, and Spanish.<br />

Supporting courses are <strong>of</strong>fered in Greek and Latin.<br />

Primary Areas <strong>of</strong> Faculty Research: Please refer to the<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Foreign Language Web site for detailed information<br />

on faculty members and their areas <strong>of</strong> expertise.<br />

Prerequisites to Degree Program: The student must have a B.A.<br />

degree or equivalent from an accredited institution with suitable<br />

preparation in the chosen foreign language and be accepted by the<br />

department. Deficiencies in undergraduate major or prerequisites for<br />

advanced courses may be included in the student’s program.<br />

Requirements for the Master <strong>of</strong> Arts Degree in German and<br />

Spanish: Aside from deficiencies, a minimum <strong>of</strong> 36 semester hours<br />

<strong>of</strong> course work is required for the degree. Each candidate must pass a<br />

comprehensive examination covering course work and a reading list.<br />

Upon admission to this program the candidate will be assigned an<br />

adviser who, in consultation with the candidate, will design a suitable<br />

program for the candidate. The adviser, in consultation with other<br />

members <strong>of</strong> the department, will select an examination committee for<br />

the comprehensive oral and written examinations. Detailed program<br />

descriptions, including reading lists and examination procedures, are<br />

available from the department.<br />

Requirements for the Master <strong>of</strong> Arts Degree in French:<br />

Candidates for the Master <strong>of</strong> Arts Degree in French shall opt for one<br />

<strong>of</strong> two areas <strong>of</strong> concentration:<br />

Option A: French <strong>Studies</strong> Concentration. Minimum <strong>of</strong> 36 hours<br />

required, 18 <strong>of</strong> which should be in literature courses approved by the<br />

graduate adviser. This option is considered a terminal one for the degree.<br />

Option B: Literature Concentration. Candidates for this option<br />

must fulfill the 36 hour requirement <strong>of</strong> Option A and must complete<br />

12 additional hours <strong>of</strong> literature courses approved by the graduate<br />

adviser, 6 <strong>of</strong> which must be 600V for presentation <strong>of</strong> a master’s thesis.<br />

Candidates holding teaching assistantships may have their assistantships<br />

renewed for a third year.<br />

Any course substitutions must be approved by the French graduate<br />

adviser.<br />

Foreign Languages (FLAN)<br />

FLAN4003 Special Language I (Irregular) Under the number, various oriental,<br />

African, or other less commonly-taught languages will be <strong>of</strong>fered from year to year.<br />

Prerequisite: junior standing. May be repeated for 3 hours.<br />

FLAN4013 Special Languages II (Irregular) Continuation <strong>of</strong> Special Language I.<br />

Prerequisite: FLAN 4003 or equivalent. May be repeated for 3 hours.<br />

FLAN4023 Language Teaching and the Internet (Fa) This course provides senior<br />

level undergraduate and graduate students <strong>of</strong> foreign languages with innovative ways to teach<br />

and communicate through the use <strong>of</strong> the internet as applied to second language learning.<br />

Topics <strong>of</strong> discussion include instructional systems design, web-based technologies, graphics,<br />

presentation technologies, and effective utilization <strong>of</strong> technological tools in language courses.<br />

Prerequisite: Senior standing.<br />

FLAN4033 Language Teaching and Video Applications (Sp) This course pr<strong>of</strong>ices<br />

senior lever undergraduates and graduate students with the knowledge and skills needed<br />

to teach and communicate through the use <strong>of</strong> video as applied to second languages. Topics<br />

<strong>of</strong> discussion include instructional systems design, vidoe taping, editing and development for<br />

internet and DVD delivery,a nd effective utilization <strong>of</strong> video in teaching and communication.<br />

Prerequisite: Senior standing.<br />

FLAN4713 Language and Culture (Sp, Su, Fa) Anthropological approaches to the<br />

description and analysis <strong>of</strong> languages and their extension into ethnographic semantics with<br />

emphasis on cognitive models and their sociological correlates. (Same as ANTH 4713,COMM<br />

4713)<br />

FLAN504V Translation Workshop (Irregular) (1-6) Problems <strong>of</strong> translation and the<br />

role <strong>of</strong> the translator as both scholar and creative writer; involves primarily the discussion in<br />

workshop <strong>of</strong> the translations <strong>of</strong> poetry, drama, and fiction done by the students, some emphasis<br />

upon comparative studies <strong>of</strong> existing translations <strong>of</strong> well-known works. Primary material will<br />

vary. Prerequisite: reading knowledge <strong>of</strong> a foreign language.<br />

FLAN505V Workshop (Irregular) (1-3) Specialized pr<strong>of</strong>essional problems and topics<br />

in foreign language based career areas. May be repeated for 3 hours.<br />

FLAN5063 Teaching Foreign Languages on the College Level (Irregular)<br />

Focus on basic methodological concepts and their practical application to college foreign language<br />

instruction.<br />

FLAN5083 Developments in Second Language Teaching (Irregular) A review<br />

<strong>of</strong> techniques, strategies, and methodologies and a survey <strong>of</strong> recent developments in second<br />

language teaching.<br />

FLAN575V Special Investigations (Sp, Fa) (1-6) May be repeated for 6 hours.<br />

Arabic (ARAB)<br />

ARAB4053 Arabic Readings (Irregular) Develops skill in description, analysis, and<br />

argumentation through weekly reading and writing assignments within a workshop atmosphere.<br />

Selected readings from various styles <strong>of</strong> standard Arabic, ranging from newspapers to<br />

literary texts.<br />

Middle Eastern <strong>Studies</strong> (MEST)<br />

MEST4003 Middle East <strong>Studies</strong> Colloquium (Sp, Su, Fa) An interdepartmental<br />

colloquium with an annual change in subject required <strong>of</strong> all students in the Middle East studies<br />

program. Prerequisite: sophomore standing. May be repeated for 6 hours.<br />

FREN4003 French Grammar and Composition (Fa) Prerequisite: FREN 3003 or<br />

FREN 3103.<br />

FREN4033 French for Oral Pr<strong>of</strong>iciency (Sp) Three hours per week <strong>of</strong> conversation<br />

practice for the advanced undergraduate. Prerequisite: FREN 3003 or FREN 3103.<br />

FREN4063 Applied Linguistics: Phonology, Morphology, and Syntax (Fa)<br />

Prerequisite: FREN 3003 and FREN 3103.<br />

FREN4113 Special Themes in French Literature (Irregular) Topics not normally<br />

covered in period courses. Sample topics: “The Comic Tradition in French Literature,” “French<br />

Cinema.” Topics announced one semester in advance. Prerequisite: FREN 3113.<br />

FREN4203 Quebec <strong>Studies</strong> (Irregular) A study <strong>of</strong> Quebec’s culture, institutions,<br />

economy, literature and cinema. Prerequisite: FREN 3113.<br />

FREN4213 French Civilization (Sp) Prerequisite: FREN 3113.<br />

FREN4223 A Survey <strong>of</strong> French Literature I (Su) A survey <strong>of</strong> French literature, its<br />

forms and themes from the medieval period through the 18th century. Prerequisite: FREN<br />

3113.<br />

FREN4233 A Survey <strong>of</strong> French Literature II (Sp, Su, Fa) A survey <strong>of</strong> French literature,<br />

its forms and themes in the 19th and 20th centuries. Prerequisite: FREN 3113.<br />

FREN4333 Business French (Fa) Introduction and orientation to the French world <strong>of</strong><br />

business and commerce through the study <strong>of</strong> vocabulary, forms, and formulas and expression<br />

used in commercial correspondence. Prerequisite: FREN 3113.<br />

FREN4343 Business French: Quebec (Irregular) Introduction to French Business<br />

Language in the context <strong>of</strong> North America, focusing on Quebec and its economy. Prerequisite:<br />

FREN 3113. May be repeated for 6 hours.<br />

FREN5003 French Grammar and Phonetics (Irregular) Systematic review <strong>of</strong> principles<br />

<strong>of</strong> French grammar and syntax; Comprehensive presentation <strong>of</strong> French phonetics.<br />

FREN5013 French Stylistics and Advanced Composition (Irregular) Analysis<br />

<strong>of</strong> genres and stylistic choices available in written French. Intensive practice in composition<br />

especially as it relates to graduate-level courses.<br />

FREN5033 Advanced French Conversation (Irregular) This course will provide<br />

small discussion environment in which graduate students will improve their command <strong>of</strong> spoken<br />

French in an interactive setting. Discussion will concentrate on current cultural issues in<br />

the French speaking world.<br />

FREN5213 French Culture & Civilization (Irregular) An analysis <strong>of</strong> French cultural<br />

symbols and attitudes as observed in their historical economical, political, social, educational,<br />

and linguistic aspects.<br />

FREN5233 Advanced Business French (Irregular) The purpose <strong>of</strong> this course<br />

is to provide insight into both the language and the culture <strong>of</strong> the French-speaking business<br />

world, primarily in metropolitan France. The course is primarily an advanced language course<br />

focused on a specialized and technical vocabulary and subject matter, drawn from the world<br />

<strong>of</strong> business.<br />

FREN5333 Old French Literature (Irregular) An intensive study <strong>of</strong> French Medieval<br />

Literature from the Chansons de Geste to Vilon, including an in-depth analysis <strong>of</strong> the genres<br />

and their evolution, and <strong>of</strong> the major authors <strong>of</strong> the times.<br />
