MUSY5123 Proseminar: Musical Notations, Transnotation and Analysis<br />
(Even years, Sp) Principles and practices for the study and musical analysis <strong>of</strong> gestural<br />
and oral “notations”, as well as standard notation, for music and dance.<br />
MUSY5213 Proseminar: Historical Ethnomusicology (Even years, Fa) An<br />
introduction to historical ethnomusicological study with readings and discussion <strong>of</strong> seminal<br />
writings in the field.<br />
MUSY5223 Seminar: Latin American Music (Even years, Sp) A study <strong>of</strong><br />
the process and result <strong>of</strong> musical hybridization in South America and the Caribbean, from<br />
European colonization to the present.<br />
MUSY5313 Proseminar: Topics in Asian and Middle Eastern Musics (Sp)<br />
Research seminars on selected topics, such as The Performing Arts in East Asia; and Music<br />

5423, including, but not limited to: European Folk Music; the musical or scholarly legacy <strong>of</strong> a<br />
particular figure.<br />
MUSY5353 Seminar: Topics in Systematic Musicology (Irregular) Seminars on<br />
selected topics such as Musical and A-musical Grammars (requires experience in functional<br />
programming languages); and Modes, Melodies, Instruments, and Singers. May be repeated.<br />

MUSY5363 Proseminar: Music Cognition (Sp) An exploration <strong>of</strong> recent literature<br />
concerning the mental mechanisms that underlie our ability to perceive, understand, produce,<br />
perform, and enjoy music. Introductory in nature, with readings drawn from the fields <strong>of</strong> psychology,<br />
philosophy, musicology, computer science, and neuroscience.<br />
MUSY5371 Early Asian Music Performance Workshop (Irregular) Approaches<br />
to performing early Asian musics. Links with Summer <strong>School</strong>, the Ancient Asian Music<br />
Consort, and/or an Artist in Residence. May be repeated for 2 hours.<br />
MUSY5383 Ethnomusicology Summer Fieldwork (Irregular) A minimum <strong>of</strong> 6<br />
weeks summer fieldwork related to the topic <strong>of</strong> the student’s thesis, resulting in an extensive<br />
fieldwork report and the submission <strong>of</strong> collected material, to be deposited in the <strong>University</strong><br />
Library. Prerequisite: MUSY 5113.<br />
MUSY5391 Ethnomusicology Performance <strong>Studies</strong> (Irregular) Applied vocal<br />
or instrumental studies relating to the performance activities <strong>of</strong> the International Center for<br />
Research in Early Asian and Middle Eastern Musics. (Private study, as available) May be<br />

MUSY5413 Proseminar: Cross-cultural Performance Practices (Sp) A survey<br />
<strong>of</strong> performance practices from historic western art music through modern non-western music.<br />
An introductury course with readings from seventeenth- and eighteenth-century performance<br />
treatises as well as a study <strong>of</strong> written and aural traditions <strong>of</strong> non-western music.<br />
MUSY5423 Seminar: History <strong>of</strong> Jazz (Fa) A study <strong>of</strong> the musical and cultural crossfertilization<br />
which produced this influential twentieth-century art form, as well as a general<br />
examination <strong>of</strong> its major practitioners.<br />

approaches to piano pedagogy and its application in individual/class instruction. Involves<br />
demonstration <strong>of</strong> principles through actual teaching <strong>of</strong> beginning, intermediate and upper level<br />
students.<br />
MUPD5202 Voice Pedagogy I (Sp, Su, Fa) <strong>Graduate</strong>-level study <strong>of</strong> the techniques<br />
and materials <strong>of</strong> teaching voice.<br />

analytical and writing skills necessary for academic research in music education. Each student<br />
identifies one problem specific to music education, finds and reviews related literature and<br />
sources, develops a comprehensive bibliography, and writes a paper which synthesizes the<br />
research. Open to graduate students and undergraduates in honors in music education.<br />
MUED5653 Seminar: Issues in Music Education (Sp, Su, Fa) A seminar exploring<br />
the relationships between the pr<strong>of</strong>ession <strong>of</strong> teaching music and selected views about<br />
learning theories, teaching methods, philosophy, psychology, and other selected topics relevant<br />
to contemporary music education.<br />

MUED588V The Choral Program: Changing Materials and Techniques (Sp,<br />
Su, Fa) (1-3) Treatment <strong>of</strong> specific problems and issues-survey <strong>of</strong> choral literature; materials<br />
and contemporary methods appropriate to the development <strong>of</strong> a comprehensive choral<br />
experience.<br />
MUED5973 Tests and Measurement in Music (Fa) This course will address the<br />
psychometric concepts <strong>of</strong> tests and measurement <strong>of</strong> music achievement, aptitude, attitude,<br />
and self assessment. The course will focus on the teaching and assessment <strong>of</strong> musical skills,<br />
musical responses, and will critically examine existing aptitude tests (Seashore, Watkins<br />
Farnum, Gordon, etc). Basic statistical concepts and data analysis used in common testing<br />
scenarios will be introduced. Prerequisite: graduate standing in music.<br />
MUED5983 Psychology <strong>of</strong> Music Behavior (Even years, Sp) This course is an<br />
introduction to the psychology <strong>of</strong> music, and will adopt an interdisciplinary view toward the<br />
field, covering such topics as philosophical and sociological questions about the nature and<br />
function <strong>of</strong> music, the physiology <strong>of</strong> the ear, the physical and perceptual properties <strong>of</strong> sounds<br />
(acoustics), performance anxiety, preference and taste research, social and pedagogical attributes<br />
<strong>of</strong> performance, and behavioral musical responses. Prerequisite: graduate standing.<br />
