The <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong>: Departments and Course Descriptions<br />
SCWK5343 Advanced Practice with Groups (Sp, Su) This course provides<br />
advanced knowledge, skills, and values needed to assess and intervene effectively with populations<br />
seen in the social work practice <strong>of</strong> group therapy. This course examines group dynamics,<br />
life-course and strengths perspectives, and client-centered assessment <strong>of</strong> needs and their<br />
application in agency settings. Prerequisite: SCWK 5003 or SCWK 5013.<br />
SCWK5412 Foundation Field Seminar (Sp) A required course for MSW students<br />
without an accredited undergraduate degree in social work. The purpose <strong>of</strong> the seminar is<br />
to allow students to integrate classroom content with experiences in the field, to learn peer<br />
supervision and consultation, and to learn from the experiences <strong>of</strong> other students in the field.<br />
Corequisite: SCWK 5434.<br />
SCWK5434 Foundation Field Internship (Sp) This course is required <strong>of</strong> all graduate<br />
students entering the MSW program without an accredited undergraduate degree in social<br />
work. Minimum <strong>of</strong> 330 clock hours <strong>of</strong> agency-based pr<strong>of</strong>essional social work practicum experience,<br />
supervised by a licensed MSW, is required. Corequisite: SCWK 5412. Prerequisite:<br />
SCWK 5003, SCWK 4333, SCWK 4073, SCWK 4093, and SCWK 4153.<br />
SCWK5442 Field Seminar III (Su) This seminar is required <strong>of</strong> all graduate students<br />
entering the MSW program with advanced standing. Students integrate classroom content with<br />
experiences in the field, learn peer supervision and consultation, and learn from the experience<br />
<strong>of</strong> other students in the field. Corequisite: SCWK 5444. Prerequisite: admission to graduate<br />
program with advanced standing.<br />
SCWK5444 Field Internship III (Su) This course is required <strong>of</strong> all graduate students<br />
entering the MSW program with advanced standing. A minimum <strong>of</strong> 240 clock hours<br />
<strong>of</strong> agency-based pr<strong>of</strong>essional social work practicum experience, supervised by a licensed<br />
MSW, is required. Corequisite: SCWK 5442. Prerequisite: admission to graduate program with<br />
advanced standing.<br />
SCWK6000L Thesis Laboratory (Sp, Su) This laboratory is required for completion<br />
<strong>of</strong> the thesis, which is developed through components <strong>of</strong> the graduate Research & Technology<br />
sequence. Other courses in the graduate curriculum provide support for the conceptualization<br />
and development <strong>of</strong> the thesis. This laboratory is taken in conjunction with SCWK 5073 and<br />
SCWK 6073. Corequisite: SCWK 5073 and SCWK 6073.<br />
SCWK6003 Life Course Multi-System Social Work I (Fa) In this first course <strong>of</strong><br />
a two-semester sequence, students select a community problem, provide services to clients,<br />
and address the problem through policy analysis. A review <strong>of</strong> literature regarding theory and<br />
practice, paradigm analysis, development <strong>of</strong> a practice model, and implementation <strong>of</strong> micro<br />
and mezzo interventions in the field are examined. Corequisite: SCWK 6444, SCWK 6442,<br />
and SCWK 5073. Prerequisite: completion <strong>of</strong> year one for two-year students, or summer<br />
semester for advanced standing students.<br />
SCWK6013 Life Course Multi-System Social Work II (Sp) In this second <strong>of</strong> a<br />
two-course sequence students provide services to social work clients. This course covers<br />
application <strong>of</strong> life course theory and multi-system and diversity perspectives. Issues across the<br />
life course are considered in addressing interventions through program development, a grant<br />
proposal submission, and implementation <strong>of</strong> macro interventions. Corequisite: SCWK 6073,<br />
SCWK 6454, and SCWK 6452. Prerequisite: SCWK 6003.<br />
SCWK6073 Social Work Research and Technology III (Sp) In this final research<br />
course, students collect and analyze data as planned in the thesis proposal submitted for<br />
Research and Technology II. Course content focuses on the advanced research skills necessary<br />
to complete the thesis. Students write a research report <strong>of</strong> their findings and submit it for<br />
publication. Corequisite: SCWK 6013 and SCWK 6000L. Prerequisite: SCWK 5073.<br />
SCWK6442 Advanced Field Seminar I (Fa) The first <strong>of</strong> two advanced field seminars<br />
required <strong>of</strong> all students in the MSW program. The purpose <strong>of</strong> the seminar is to allow students<br />
to integrate classroom content with experiences in the field, to practice peer supervision and<br />
consultation, and to learn from the experiences <strong>of</strong> other students in the field. Corequisite:<br />
SCWK 6444. Prerequisite: SCWK 5412 or SCWK 5442.<br />
SCWK6444 Advanced Field Internship I (Fa) This is the first <strong>of</strong> two advanced<br />
field internships required <strong>of</strong> all graduate students in the MSW program. A minimum <strong>of</strong> 330<br />
clock hours <strong>of</strong> agency-based pr<strong>of</strong>essional social work practicum experience, supervised by<br />
a licensed MSW, is required. Corequisite: SCWK 6442. Prerequisite: SCWK 5434 or SCWK<br />

Field Internship courses required <strong>of</strong> all graduate students in the MSW program. A minimum <strong>of</strong><br />

Prerequisites to Degree Program: Prior undergraduate work in<br />
social theory, research methods, statistics, and writing is considered<br />
necessary for successful performance at the graduate level. SOCI<br />
3303 (or an approved equivalent), SOCI 3313, SOCI 4023 (or an<br />
approved equivalent), and SOCI 5053 (for students without a B.A.<br />
in sociology) are required to eliminate deficiencies. Undergraduate<br />
deficiencies must be removed by taking the appropriate undergraduate<br />
courses during the first twelve hours <strong>of</strong> graduate work or the first<br />
time the courses are <strong>of</strong>fered.<br />

In addition to these core courses, the student must take sufficient<br />
hours <strong>of</strong> electives to reach 31 semester hours total. A maximum <strong>of</strong><br />
three elective credit hours may be taken at the 4000 level without<br />
prior approval by the <strong>Graduate</strong> Committee. Students may apply<br />
three hours <strong>of</strong> independent study toward the degree provided that a<br />
research proposal is approved by the instructor prior to enrollment<br />
in the course. Except for courses in Rural Sociology, the student’s<br />
adviser must authorize courses outside <strong>of</strong> the department. Except for<br />
rare circumstances, no more than three hours <strong>of</strong> credit outside <strong>of</strong> the<br />
department will count for the degree.<br />
The Department <strong>of</strong> Sociology and Criminal Justice <strong>of</strong>fers a thesis<br />
and non-thesis option. Completion <strong>of</strong> the program for all students<br />
is contingent upon passing a comprehensive examination covering<br />
major course work.<br />
Thesis Option: Students must take 25 hours <strong>of</strong> course work and six<br />
hours <strong>of</strong> thesis credit. All M.A. candidates in this option are required<br />
