HKRD5893 Public and Private Finance in HKRD (Fa) Develops an understanding<br />
<strong>of</strong> both public and private finance management for students in public and private management<br />

Areas <strong>of</strong> Specialization: The Higher Education doctoral program<br />
prepares students for pr<strong>of</strong>essional competence, leadership, and service<br />
in two areas: administration (including student personnel work)<br />
and college teaching. A third program option combining elements<br />
<strong>of</strong> both administration and college teaching also may be selected.<br />
Within these areas <strong>of</strong> specialization, practicing pr<strong>of</strong>essionals as well<br />
as persons entering the higher education field, may pursue programs<br />
emphasizing community colleges, four-year colleges and universities,<br />
or state, regional, or national agencies.<br />
Prerequisites for Acceptance to the Program: In addition to<br />
meeting <strong>University</strong> requirements for admission to the <strong>Graduate</strong><br />
<strong>School</strong>, all students seeking admission to the higher education program<br />
must complete program application procedures that include<br />
program application, three letters <strong>of</strong> reference, an autobiographical<br />
sketch, a sample <strong>of</strong> their writing ability, and for all educational specialist<br />
and doctoral applicants, a Miller Analogies or <strong>Graduate</strong> Record<br />
Examinations score and a personal interview with members <strong>of</strong> the<br />
higher education faculty.<br />
Requirements for the Master <strong>of</strong> Education Degree: (Minimum<br />
33 hours.) The master’s degree program in higher education provides<br />
academic preparation for persons who plan to seek entry level positions<br />
at the director or assistant director level in both two-year and<br />
four-year institutions for which a master’s degree is appropriate preparation,<br />
including community colleges and technical colleges, liberal<br />
arts colleges, and four-year colleges and universities. Depending upon<br />
prior experience, graduates may expect to find employment in a wide<br />
variety <strong>of</strong> positions in residence life, financial aid, career planning<br />
and placement, student activities, student union management, alumni<br />
affairs, development, public information, continuing education, financial<br />
management, human resources, and institutional research, or as<br />
adviser to fraternities and sororities, or minority students.<br />
In combination with course work outside <strong>of</strong> Higher Education, students<br />
may prepare for positions in development and in other beginning<br />
level positions in post-secondary institutions and educational<br />
agencies.<br />
The 33 graduate-semester-hour program (or 27 hours and a thesis)<br />
includes a minimum <strong>of</strong> 21 graduate semester hours in higher education,<br />
a minimum <strong>of</strong> 6 semester hours <strong>of</strong> adviser-approved electives,<br />
and 3 semester hours in research or statistics, Additionally, students<br />
with no prior experience in post-secondary institutions will be<br />
expected to complete one or more internships.<br />
Requirements for the Educational Specialist Degree: Two<br />
options are available: one in college teaching and one in college<br />
administration. While both programs are designed primarily for<br />
persons currently employed in post-secondary education, they can,<br />
under certain circumstances, be used as pre-service preparation for<br />
persons presenting two years <strong>of</strong> relevant experience. Each option<br />
contains a minimum <strong>of</strong> 30 graduate semester hours including 15<br />
semester hours in higher education, three semester hours in research<br />
or statistics, a written project, and a minimum <strong>of</strong> six graduate<br />
semester hours <strong>of</strong> approved electives from outside Higher Education<br />
(previous graduate work may be counted toward this requirement).<br />
Students enrolled in either specialization with no prior full-time<br />
experience directly in keeping with their goals will be required to<br />
complete one or more internships. A basic requirement for majors<br />
in college teaching is the completion <strong>of</strong> a minimum <strong>of</strong> 30 graduate<br />
semester hours <strong>of</strong> course work in one or more intended teaching<br />
field(s), including previous graduate work.<br />
Requirements for the Doctor <strong>of</strong> Education Degree: Three program<br />
concentrations are <strong>of</strong>fered: college teaching, administration,<br />
and a specialization combining elements <strong>of</strong> both. Each student’s program<br />
<strong>of</strong> study includes 12 semester hours <strong>of</strong> higher education core<br />
courses, 9 semester hours <strong>of</strong> courses stipulated for an area <strong>of</strong> specialization,<br />
6 semester hours <strong>of</strong> electives in higher education, 9 semester<br />
hours from outside higher education; and 9-12 semester hours in<br />
research methods and statistics. Programs for students in the administration<br />
specialization must contain nine graduate semester hours in<br />
courses outside higher education while those in the college teaching<br />
specialization must contain a minimum <strong>of</strong> 45 post-baccalaureate,<br />
graduate semester hours in a teaching field(s). Students without three<br />
years <strong>of</strong> relevant experience in their field(s) <strong>of</strong> intended endeavor<br />
will be required to complete one or more appropriate internships.<br />
Higher Education (HIED)<br />
HIED5003 Overview-American Higher Education (Fa) A basic course in the study<br />
<strong>of</strong> higher education open to all students seeking careers in colleges and universities. Serves<br />
as an introduction to the programs, problems, issues, and trends in higher education.<br />
HIED5013 Community College Teaching II (Sp) Strategies for effective community<br />
college teaching. Topics include appropriate use <strong>of</strong> media, distance learning alternative<br />
learning and teaching strategies, the strengths and weaknesses <strong>of</strong> cooperative education,<br />
classroom management, serving the disabled student, and the responsibilities and roles <strong>of</strong> the<br />
community college faculty. Prerequisite: HIED 5003.<br />
HIED5023 Community College Teaching Internship (Sp, Fa) Supervised field<br />
experiences in community college teaching. Corequisite: HIED 5013. Prerequisite: HIED 5003.<br />
