Areas <strong>of</strong> Concentration for the M.M. in Music: Applied music,<br />

composition, theory, instrumental and choral conducting, music history,<br />

and music education.<br />

Prerequisites to Degree Program: To enter the Master <strong>of</strong> Music<br />

program, students should apply to the Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>Studies</strong><br />

in Music for the specific degree program in which they are interested.<br />

Students wishing to change from one degree program or major<br />

applied area to another must also apply to the Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>Graduate</strong><br />

<strong>Studies</strong> in Music. The Department Chair and the Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>Graduate</strong><br />

<strong>Studies</strong> in Music, in consultation with the faculty <strong>of</strong> the specific area,<br />

determine acceptance, provisional acceptance contingent on the making<br />

up <strong>of</strong> specific deficiencies, or rejection <strong>of</strong> the student for admission<br />

to the degree program in the specific area <strong>of</strong> concentration.<br />

Requirements for the Master <strong>of</strong> Music Degree: In addition to<br />

the general requirements <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> the following must<br />

be met:<br />

1. All students seeking admission to the program for the degree<br />

<strong>of</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Music, with concentrations in Performance,<br />

Composition, Theory, History, and Conducting, must show evidence<br />

<strong>of</strong> satisfactory pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in aural and written theory and<br />

in music history and literature. This shall be done by means <strong>of</strong><br />

an aural and written theory and history diagnostic examination<br />

administered by the department. Any student who has not demonstrated<br />

satisfactory pr<strong>of</strong>iciency in these areas prior to entrance<br />

will be registered in remedial or refresher courses. Students<br />

seeking admission to the program for the degree <strong>of</strong> Master <strong>of</strong><br />

Music with a concentration in Music Education should consult<br />

with the Director <strong>of</strong> <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>Studies</strong> in Music for pr<strong>of</strong>iciency<br />

requirements.<br />

2. Applicants will be advised by the major pr<strong>of</strong>essor in the area <strong>of</strong><br />

concentration regarding piano pr<strong>of</strong>iciency requirements.<br />

3. All Performance applicants must present an audition with repertoire<br />

corresponding to that required for the degree <strong>of</strong> Bachelor<br />

<strong>of</strong> Music at the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arkansas</strong>; this may be done by<br />

recording.<br />

4. All non-performance applicants may take placement auditions<br />

upon beginning residency.<br />

5. Applicants in composition will submit scores <strong>of</strong> at least three <strong>of</strong><br />

their compositions.<br />

6. Applicants in music history will pass a reading examination in<br />

French, German, or Italian and will demonstrate knowledge <strong>of</strong><br />

common music terms in all three languages before admission to<br />

candidacy.<br />

7. In addition to completing the specified requirements, the candidate<br />

will take comprehensive written examinations followed by<br />

the oral examination.<br />

8. All candidates for the degree <strong>of</strong> Master <strong>of</strong> Music, except those<br />

in composition (D.), music theory (E.), music history (unless<br />

pursuing the early music performance option) (F.), and music<br />

education (J.), must participate in at least one ensemble per<br />

semester throughout their residence.<br />

The programs <strong>of</strong> study are listed below. All course selections<br />

are subject to approval <strong>of</strong> the graduate adviser in consultation with<br />

applied teacher or thesis director.<br />

A. Master <strong>of</strong> Music in Performance, Instrumental:<br />

I. APPLIED MUSIC<br />

Requirements include:<br />

1) MUAP 510V for four semesters, total 14 hours,<br />

to include:<br />

2) MUAP 5201 (solo recital)<br />

3) MUAP 5211 (chamber recital)<br />

II. MUSIC HISTORY AND MUSIC THEORY<br />

1) MUHS 5973 Seminar in Bibliography and<br />

Methods <strong>of</strong> Research<br />

2) One music history course to be selected from<br />

MUHS 5753, 5773, 5783, 5793<br />

3) One music theory course to be selected from<br />

MUTH 477V (3), 5623, 5343, 5643<br />

4) Electives totaling 3 hours in either music history<br />

and/or music theory to be selected from (2) or<br />

(3) above or MUHS 4253 or 4963H<br />

III. ELECTIVES<br />

To be selected from music courses at the 4000-<br />

6000 level with the consent <strong>of</strong> the adviser and to<br />

include not more than 4 hours <strong>of</strong> ensemble. Note:<br />

Study <strong>of</strong> the appropriate literature is required if not<br />

adequately covered in the undergraduate degree<br />

presented for admission but will count toward the<br />

degree as an elective.<br />

B. Master <strong>of</strong> Music in Performance, Keyboard:<br />

I. APPLIED MUSIC<br />
