Areas <strong>of</strong> Concentration: Advanced journalism studies, combined<br />

with graduate-level requirements in an additional academic discipline.<br />

The purposes <strong>of</strong> the interdisciplinary program are to refine the<br />

skills <strong>of</strong> graduate journalism students through advanced writing<br />

courses in journalism and English; to <strong>of</strong>fer comprehensive, mediarelated<br />

courses in government, public affairs, and law; and to provide<br />

journalists expertise in an additional academic discipline.<br />

Prerequisites to Degree Program: A student with fewer than<br />

three years <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional journalism experience must possess an<br />

undergraduate degree, including a minimum <strong>of</strong> 21 undergraduate<br />

course hours in journalism and other courses specified by the<br />

Journalism <strong>Graduate</strong> Faculty Committee; a minimum undergraduate<br />

grade-point average <strong>of</strong> 3.00; and a minimum score <strong>of</strong> 1,000 on the<br />

verbal and quantitative parts <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Graduate</strong> Record Examinations<br />

(including a minimum score <strong>of</strong> 500 on the verbal part). A student with<br />

three or more years <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional journalism experience must possess<br />

an undergraduate degree and a minimum score <strong>of</strong> 1,000 on the<br />

verbal and quantitative parts <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Graduate</strong> Record Examinations<br />

(including a minimum score <strong>of</strong> 500 on the verbal part), or an undergraduate<br />

degree and a record <strong>of</strong> superior pr<strong>of</strong>essional achievement.<br />

Requirements for the Master <strong>of</strong> Arts Degree: In addition to the<br />

requirements <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> (page 39), the Master <strong>of</strong> Arts<br />

degree in Journalism requires a minimum <strong>of</strong> 30 semester hours with<br />

a cumulative grade-point average <strong>of</strong> 3.00. Students must complete:<br />

1. 12 hours <strong>of</strong> graduate credit in journalism,<br />

2. 12 hours <strong>of</strong> graduate credit in a single department other<br />

than journalism chosen by the student and approved by the<br />

Journalism <strong>Graduate</strong> Faculty Committee, and<br />

3. a master’s thesis (6 semester hours).<br />

Journalism (JOUR)<br />

JOUR4063 Computer-Assisted Publishing (Irregular) Indepth, hands-on exploration<br />

<strong>of</strong> computer hardware and s<strong>of</strong>tware in the design and production <strong>of</strong> media messages.<br />

Examination <strong>of</strong> developing media technologies and the computer’s influence on design and<br />

conceptualization.<br />

JOUR4333 Ethics in Journalism (Irregular) Critical examination <strong>of</strong> specific ethical<br />

problems confronting pr<strong>of</strong>essionals in all areas <strong>of</strong> mass communications. Reading and writing<br />

assignments are aimed at familiarizing students with the nature <strong>of</strong> the mass media and their<br />

social responsibilities. Prerequisite: junior standing.<br />

JOUR4503 Advanced Feature Writing (Fa) This course is designed for students with<br />

proven feature writing skills and basic training, to write a magazine-length, non-fiction, publishable-quality<br />

story on a timely subject that has connections to northwest <strong>Arkansas</strong>. Stories will<br />

be published in a student-managed forum. Prerequisite: JOUR 3123.<br />

JOUR4883 Advanced Television News Production (Irregular) Continuation <strong>of</strong><br />

JOUR 4873. Students prepare and present television newscasts for air. Laboratory component<br />

arranged. Corequisite: Lab component. Prerequisite: JOUR 4873.<br />

JOUR4903 Community Newspaper (Sp) This three-hour course will blend student’<br />

reporting and editing skills with instruction on how regional newspapers select and present<br />

news to a local audience. This course will instruct students in deciding news stories for<br />

regional readers, how those stories can best be written and displayed. The semester goal is to<br />

publish a paper. Prerequisite: junior standing.<br />

JOUR5003 Advanced Reporting (Irregular) Stresses public affairs coverage, interpretive,<br />

investigative, and analytic journalism, involving research, work with documents, public<br />

records, and budgets and specialized reporting.<br />

JOUR5033 Critical and Opinion Writing and Commentary (Irregular)<br />

Experience in writing and analyzing columns, editorials, criticism, and other forms <strong>of</strong> opinion<br />

and commentary in the media and in examining the media’s role as a forum for opinion and<br />

commentary and its impact and influence.<br />

JOUR5043 Research Methods in Journalism (Sp, Su, Fa) Research methods <strong>of</strong><br />

utility in journalism. Emphasis on survey research, electronic data base searching, and traditional<br />

library research. Prerequisite: graduate standing or honors program standing.<br />

JOUR5063 Issues in Advertising and Public Relations (Fa) Seminar course<br />

involving the critical examination <strong>of</strong> the major cultural, social, political, economic, ethical, and<br />

persuasion theories and/or issues relevant to advertising and public relations affecting individuals,<br />

organizations, societies. Prerequisite: graduate standing.<br />

JOUR5073 Propaganda and Public Opinion (Irregular) Examines and analyzes<br />

the means <strong>of</strong> influencing and measuring public opinion, with an emphasis on survey research<br />

and polling.<br />

JOUR5183 International Mass Communications (Sp, Su, Fa) Examination <strong>of</strong><br />

national media systems, issues in international communications, the role <strong>of</strong> the media in coverage<br />

<strong>of</strong> international affairs, and the impact <strong>of</strong> new technologies on mass communications.<br />

JOUR5193 Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Journalism Seminar (Irregular) Examination <strong>of</strong> complex<br />

problems encountered by pr<strong>of</strong>essional journalists with focus on research and analysis <strong>of</strong> the<br />

role <strong>of</strong> journalism in major social, economic, and political developments. May be repeated<br />

twice for a maximum <strong>of</strong> 6 hours credit, as content will vary. May be repeated for 6 hours.<br />

JOUR5233 Media and Public Policy (Irregular) Focuses on the interaction between<br />

media, politics, government, and public policy, particularly on the impact and influence <strong>of</strong> the<br />

media on the public policy agenda.<br />

JOUR5313 Literature <strong>of</strong> Journalism (Irregular) A study <strong>of</strong> superior works <strong>of</strong> nonfiction<br />

journalism, past and present. Includes authors from Daniel Defoe to John McPhee.<br />

JOUR5323 Documentary Production I (Fa) In-depth study <strong>of</strong> documentary film as<br />

non-fiction, long form journalism. Covers subject, funding, research and development, preproduction<br />

planning, field production, talent, music, post production, promotion, broadcast and<br />

distribution. Required trip to Hot Springs Documentary Film Festival.<br />

JOUR5333 Documentary Production II (Sp) A continuation <strong>of</strong> JOUR 5323,<br />

Documentary Production I. Students photograph, write, and edit a documentary begun in the<br />

fall semester. Prerequisite: JOUR 5323.<br />

JOUR600V Master’s Thesis (Sp, Su, Fa) (1-6) Required <strong>of</strong> all M.A. journalism students.<br />

Areas <strong>of</strong> Concentration for the Master <strong>of</strong> Science Degree:<br />

Adapted movement science, athletic training, and exercise science.<br />

Areas <strong>of</strong> specialization within the Exercise Science Concentration<br />

include biomechanics, exercise management, and exercise physiology.<br />

Prerequisites to Degree Program: For acceptance to the master’s<br />

degree programs the program area requires, in addition to the general<br />

requirements for admission to the <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong>, an undergraduate<br />

degree in kinesiology or in a related field and the following admission<br />

standards: an overall undergraduate GPA <strong>of</strong> 3.00 or if the overall<br />

undergraduate GPA is between 2.70 and 2.99, the student must<br />

have a 3.00 GPA on the last 60 hours <strong>of</strong> undergraduate course work<br />

(excluding student teaching), or a GRE score <strong>of</strong> 1000 on the verbal<br />

and quantitative parts <strong>of</strong> the general test.<br />
