Admission Requirements and Procedures for the Educational<br />
Specialist Degree: This program is indefinitely suspending applications<br />
until further notice<br />
Admission Requirements and Procedures for the Doctor <strong>of</strong><br />
Philosophy Degree: Applicants for the doctoral program in counselor<br />
education may obtain an application packet from the counselor<br />
education Web site: http://cned.uark.edu.<br />
Doctoral applicants must:<br />
1. Have a completed master’s degree in counseling or its equivalent<br />
in areas specified by the Council for Accreditation <strong>of</strong><br />
Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP), and<br />
preferably one year post-master’s pr<strong>of</strong>essional counseling<br />
experience or the equivalent.<br />
2. Apply to the <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong>.<br />
3. Submit <strong>of</strong>ficial transcripts reflecting a minimum 3.5 GPA on all<br />
previous graduate work.<br />
4. Submit <strong>of</strong>ficial GRE scores indicating capacity for doctorallevel<br />
performance (successful applicants typically score at the<br />
50% percentile or higher).<br />
5. Submit three letters <strong>of</strong> recommendation indicating capacity for<br />
advanced graduate study.<br />
6. Submit an autobiographical sketch.<br />
7. Top applicants will be invited for a formal interview with the<br />
counselor education faculty.<br />
8. All applicants must be accepted by the <strong>Graduate</strong> <strong>School</strong> prior to<br />
consideration for admission into the Counseling Program.<br />
9. Complete applications are due October 15 for Spring admission<br />
and March 15 for Summer/Fall admission.<br />
Requirements for the Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy Degree: Candidates<br />
for the Doctor <strong>of</strong> Philosophy in counselor education must meet<br />
the requirements for the applicable degree in the Objectives,<br />
Regulations, and Degrees section <strong>of</strong> this catalog and complete a<br />
minimum <strong>of</strong> 98 semester hours <strong>of</strong> graduate study acceptable to their<br />
doctoral advisory committee.<br />

Cognate Requirement:<br />
Doctoral candidates must complete additional cognate area study<br />
related to the candidate’s intended specialty in the counseling pr<strong>of</strong>ession;<br />
nine hours (with advisory committee approval). Six hours <strong>of</strong><br />
courses must be at the 6000 level.<br />
College <strong>of</strong> Education Requirements:<br />
Dissertation (listed above), research and statistics (18 semester hours),<br />
graduate transfer credits (36 semester hours maximum). Additionally,<br />
there is a six-hour “foreign language requirement.” To meet this requirement,<br />
it is suggested that a student (1) take or show mastery <strong>of</strong> a foreign<br />
language or (2) take six hours <strong>of</strong> computer technology.<br />
Doctoral Portfolio<br />
Portfolios are developed with the guidance and approval <strong>of</strong> the<br />
doctoral advisory committee and are due at the time <strong>of</strong> the student’s<br />
oral comprehensive examination.<br />
Counselor Education (CNED)<br />
CNED5193 Community Counseling (Sp) An introductory study <strong>of</strong> community<br />
counseling. The course content includes information concerning the educational, historical,<br />
philosophical, and psychological foundations <strong>of</strong> community counseling as well as specific traits<br />
and skills <strong>of</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional community counselors. In addition, the course is designed to provide<br />
introductory level concepts and skills required for future certification and licensure as counseling<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essionals. Prerequisite: <strong>Graduate</strong> student status.<br />
CNED5203 Foundations <strong>of</strong> the Counseling Pr<strong>of</strong>ession (Su, Fa) A study <strong>of</strong><br />
the counseling pr<strong>of</strong>ession applicable to school, college and community agency settings.<br />
Introduction to the basic educational, historical, philosophical foundations <strong>of</strong> counseling as well<br />
as specific traits and skills <strong>of</strong> counselors. The course is also designed to provide beginning<br />
level concepts and skills required for certification and licensure. Prerequisite: Must be taken<br />
first year in program.<br />
CNED5213 Lifestyle & Career Development (Su) Theories <strong>of</strong> career development<br />
and counseling, including the use <strong>of</strong> occupational information sources and career assessment<br />
tools and techniques. Prerequisite: CNED 5333 (preferred)<br />
CNED5303 Individual Appraisal (Fa) Analysis <strong>of</strong> concepts, methods, and procedures<br />
utilized in individual appraisal.<br />
CNED5313 Program Organization and Information Management (Fa) Study <strong>of</strong><br />
client information needs and strategies for effective management <strong>of</strong> counseling services.<br />
CNED5323 Counseling Theory (Su, Fa) Introductory survey and critical analysis <strong>of</strong><br />
major alternative theoretical perspectives in counseling.<br />
CNED5333 Basic Counseling Techniques (Fa, Sp) Introduction to basic counseling<br />
techniques and skills common to multiple theoretical perspectives. Prerequisite: CNED<br />
Masters Student or Instructor Permission.<br />
CNED5343 Counseling Practicum (Sp, Fa) Supervised counseling practice. Pre or<br />
Co requisite: CEND 5303 and CNED 5363 and CNED 5373. Prerequisite: CNED 5203, CNED<br />
5323, CNED 5333, CNED 5403. CNED Faculty consent required.<br />
CNED5353 Psychopharmacology (Su) Study <strong>of</strong> theory, research, & practice issues<br />
pertaining to psychopharmacology for non-medical practitioners. Prerequisite: CNED 5203,<br />
CNED 5323, CNED 5333.<br />
CNED5363 Dynamics <strong>of</strong> Group Counseling (Sp, Fa) Therapeutic and other theoretical<br />
information is presented regarding group process and the counselor’s role in that process.<br />
An experiential group experience is required. Prerequisite: CNED 5333 and CNED 5323.<br />
CNED5373 Ethical and Legal Issues in Counseling (Fa) (Formerly CNED 5372)<br />
Review <strong>of</strong> ethical and legal standards governing pr<strong>of</strong>essional counselor training, research, and<br />
counseling practice; including client rights; confidentiality; the client-counselor relationship; and<br />
counseling research, training, and supervision. Prerequisite: CNED 5103 and CNED 5203.<br />
CNED5383 Crisis Intervention Counseling (Su) (Formerly CNED 5382) Analysis<br />
and application <strong>of</strong> short-term counseling intervention strategies in crisis situations, with special<br />
attention to incidents involving rape, physical, or emotional abuse, divorce, suicidal depression,<br />
grief, martial or family instability, and violent conflict. Prerequisite: CNED 5333 (preferred).<br />
CNED5403 Case Management and Counseling (Fa) Procedures in case management<br />
utilizing both clinical and interview data in assisting children, adolescents, and adults in<br />
educational, vocational, personal, and social planning. Prerequisite: CNED 5303 and CNED<br />
5323 and CNED 5333.<br />
CNED5513 Counseling and Human Diversity (Su) Examination <strong>of</strong> human and<br />
cultural diversity, emphasizing issues <strong>of</strong> race, class, and socioeconomic status, and how they<br />
impact our clients as individuals and as family and society members.<br />
CNED574V Counseling Internship (Sp, Fa) (1-3) A 600-clock-hour field placement<br />
in an approved setting over a minimum <strong>of</strong> two continuous semesters. Co or Prerequisite<br />
CNED 5213. Prerequisite: CNED 5203, CNED 5303, CNED 5323, CNED 5333, CNED 5343,<br />
CNED 5363, CNED 5373, CNED 5403, CNED 5513 and CNED 6203. CNED Faculty consent<br />
required. May be repeated for 6 hours.<br />
CNED599V Seminar (Irregular) (1-6) May be repeated for 6 hours.<br />
CNED6003 Counseling and Addictions (Su) A study <strong>of</strong> behavioral and substance<br />
additions, including an overview <strong>of</strong> differential treatment. Prerequisite: CNED 5323 and CNED<br />
