Senior Staff Appointments<br />

In <strong>2007</strong> the <strong>University</strong> appointed Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Peter McPhee, formerly Deputy Vice-<br />

Chancellor (Academic), as Provost to<br />

manage and monitor changes in the policies<br />

and practices that affect the academic life<br />

<strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> as a whole.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Susan Elliott was re-appointed<br />

as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Teaching,<br />

Learning and Equity). Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Warren<br />

Bebbington was also re-appointed as Pro<br />

Vice-Chancellor (<strong>University</strong> Relations).<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Dick Strugnell was appointed<br />

as Pro Vice-Chancellor (Graduate<br />

Research) and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Lyn Yates as Pro<br />

Vice-Chancellor (Research).<br />

The <strong>University</strong> welcomed five new Deans<br />

during the year:<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Ken Hinchcliff from the Ohio<br />

State <strong>University</strong> joined the <strong>University</strong> as<br />

Dean, Faculty <strong>of</strong> Veterinary Science;<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Tom Kvan from the <strong>University</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> Sydney was appointed Dean, Faculty <strong>of</strong><br />

Architecture, Building and Planning;<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Mark Considine was appointed<br />

Dean, Faculty <strong>of</strong> Arts;<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Andrea Hull, previously the<br />

Director <strong>of</strong> the Victorian College <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Arts (VCA), was appointed Dean <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Faculty <strong>of</strong> the Victorian College <strong>of</strong> the Arts<br />

on the amalgamation <strong>of</strong> the VCA with the<br />

<strong>University</strong>; and<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Iven Mareels was appointed<br />

Dean, Faculty <strong>of</strong> Engineering.<br />

In <strong>2007</strong> the <strong>University</strong> further strengthened<br />

the leadership <strong>of</strong> its Senior Executive with<br />

the appointment <strong>of</strong> Ms Elizabeth Baré,<br />

previously Vice-Principal (Human Resources)<br />

as Vice-Principal and Head <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

Services with responsibility for coordinating<br />

the <strong>University</strong>’s administrative and<br />

management services. Dr David Cookson<br />

was appointed Vice-Principal (Research)<br />

and Mr Nigel Waugh was appointed<br />

Vice-Principal (Human Resources). Ms<br />

Janet White from Monash <strong>University</strong> was<br />

appointed as <strong>University</strong> Secretary.<br />

Renowned Scholars<br />

Federation Fellows<br />

In <strong>2007</strong> three internationally outstanding<br />

researchers were awarded prestigious<br />

Federation Fellowships to conduct groundbreaking<br />

research at the <strong>University</strong>. The new<br />

Federation Fellows are physicist Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Tony Gherghetta from the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

Minnesota, an expatriate Australian returning<br />

to Australia; and immunologist Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Bill<br />

Heath at the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute.<br />

<strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Melbourne</strong> nanotechologist<br />

and biotechnologist Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Frank Caruso<br />

has been re-appointed as a Federation<br />

Fellow. They will join 15 Federation Fellows<br />

at the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

Vice-Chancellor’s Fellows<br />

Each year the <strong>University</strong> supports Vice-<br />

Chancellor’s Fellows to engage in the public<br />

life <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>, providing a scholarly<br />

environment for research, writing, teaching<br />

and related activities. Dr David Kemp (public<br />

policy expert) completed his appointment<br />

as a Vice-Chancellor’s Fellow in <strong>2007</strong>. Two<br />

other Vice-Chancellor’s Fellows – Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Brenton Broadstock (composer and<br />

musicologist) and Mr Max Gillies (satirist<br />

and actor) – continued their appointments.<br />

Former Victorian Premier Steve Bracks<br />

was appointed as an honorary Pr<strong>of</strong>essorial<br />

Fellow in the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Arts to chair<br />

a program <strong>of</strong> public policy forms on<br />

important topics and to participate in a<br />

<strong>University</strong> think tank on the values and<br />

nature <strong>of</strong> a good society.<br />

PROFILE<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

LOANE Skene<br />

One <strong>of</strong> Australia’s leading experts<br />

on medical law and ethics, Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Loane Skene specialises in health<br />

and medical law. She is a Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

<strong>of</strong> Law in the Faculty <strong>of</strong> Law and<br />

an Adjunct Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Law in the<br />

Faculty <strong>of</strong> Medicine, Dentistry and<br />

Health Sciences.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Skene was named by the<br />

Australian Financial Review among<br />

Australia’s most powerful cultural<br />

figures in <strong>2007</strong>. Deputy Chair and<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficial spokesperson <strong>of</strong> the Lockhart<br />

Committee, which was responsible for<br />

reviewing legislation, on human cloning<br />

and research involving human embryos,<br />

she has contributed extensively to<br />

the ongoing community debate about<br />

human embryonic stem cell research.<br />

Throughout the year she has taken part<br />

in an array <strong>of</strong> public lectures, seminars<br />

and hypotheticals, submissions<br />

to parliamentary committees, and<br />

addresses to political parties and<br />

parliamentary gatherings in <strong>Melbourne</strong><br />

and Brisbane.<br />

The Lockhart Committee’s<br />

recommendations have already been<br />

implemented in federal legislation and<br />

are now being adopted in the mirror<br />

legislation in the states.<br />
