Supported by Onemda’s successful<br />

mentoring program in the Faculty <strong>of</strong><br />

Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences<br />

(MDHS), enrolment numbers increased<br />

from two Indigenous undergraduate<br />

students in 2001 to 19 Indigenous<br />

students engaged in various levels <strong>of</strong> study<br />

throughout the Faculty in <strong>2007</strong>. In <strong>2007</strong><br />

Onemda consolidated its collaborations and<br />

partnerships with the Aboriginal community<br />

through organisations such as the Victorian<br />

Aboriginal Community Controlled Health<br />

Organisation and the Koorie Heritage Trust.<br />

Sponsorship <strong>of</strong> community events<br />

increased in <strong>2007</strong> through the <strong>University</strong>’s<br />

Cultural and Community Relations<br />

Committee. The Committee was enlarged<br />

to include a number <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>’s<br />

most prominent cultural staff, and its Fund<br />

made grants totaling $281,000 towards 22<br />

projects involving the community. Support<br />

was also provided to conferences, forums,<br />

publications, exhibitions, performances and<br />

festivals. Campus venues were provided<br />

without charge (or at reduced charges) for<br />

more than 30 community groups.<br />

Public Policy and Debate<br />

The <strong>University</strong> recognises a responsibility<br />

to use its expertise to contribute to<br />

policy and public debate. The <strong>University</strong>’s<br />

academics are in constant demand<br />

as authoritative and independent<br />

commentators on significant public issues.<br />

High-pr<strong>of</strong>ile contributions to debate during<br />

<strong>2007</strong> included:<br />

> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Loane Skene’s contribution to<br />

the ongoing community debate about<br />

human embryonic stem cell research<br />

in her capacity as Deputy Chair and<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficial spokesperson <strong>of</strong> the Lockhart<br />

Committee, which was responsible for<br />

receiving legislation on human cloning and<br />

research involving human embryos.<br />

> 200 free public lectures, by prominent<br />

local, national and international speakers.<br />

Highlights among the lectures were:<br />

Lecture ‘The Protection <strong>of</strong> Women and<br />

Children during Armed Conflict’ by Ms<br />

Radhika Coomaraswamy, United Nations<br />

Chancellor Ian Renard and Zimbabwe opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai at a packed public lecture in August.<br />

Vision and Reality’ by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Arthur<br />

Li, Former Secretary <strong>of</strong> Manpower and<br />

Education, Hong Kong;<br />

> ‘Where to, Zimbabwe?’ by Mr Morgan<br />

Tsvangirai, President, Zimbabwe<br />

Opposition Party;<br />

> ‘Does Pre-School Matter?’ by Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

David Kirp, US childcare public policy<br />

commentator and academic;<br />

> major public fora such as the CSHE<br />

seminar series on higher education,<br />

‘Reconciliation and the Constitution’ and<br />

the Future Fund symposium.<br />

Groups such as the <strong>Melbourne</strong> <strong>University</strong><br />

Debating Society were assisted to attend<br />

international competitions. Sponsorship<br />

was provided for internships under the Uni-<br />

Capitol Washington Internship program, for<br />

Students in Free Enterprise to attend world<br />

finals in New York and 27 elite student<br />

athletes were assisted to compete in<br />

international sporting competitions.<br />
