1. Reduce the occurrence or re-occurrence<br />
<strong>of</strong> environmental incidents and reduce the<br />
<strong>University</strong>’s environmental impact.<br />
Achievement<br />
> Trade waste license in place for all applicable <strong>University</strong> controlled facilities.<br />
> Centralised hazardous waste management system for all <strong>University</strong> entities.<br />
> Appropriate level <strong>of</strong> training is provided to staff and students who store, handle or use chemicals.<br />
> New Risk Management Procedure and Electronic Incident Reporting System facilitate management <strong>of</strong><br />
environmental risks and <strong>report</strong>ing <strong>of</strong> incidents.<br />
> Trials <strong>of</strong> lighting controlled systems commenced. Energy efficient lighting lamps (T5) purchased to replace<br />
current lamps (T8).<br />
> <strong>University</strong>’s centrally managed vehicle fleet is signed to GreenFleet.<br />
> Battery recycling via mail room and collected with monthly pick <strong>of</strong> hazardous waste collection.<br />
> The <strong>University</strong> recycles 95% <strong>of</strong> general and <strong>of</strong>fice waste from the Parkville, Werribee, Burnley, Abbotsford<br />
and VCA campuses. During <strong>2007</strong>, the <strong>University</strong> diverted 538 tonnes <strong>of</strong> general and <strong>of</strong>fice waste from land fill<br />
through this recycling program.<br />
> Approximately 168 m 3 <strong>of</strong> computers, monitors and other electronic equipment was recycled through an E-waste<br />
recycler.<br />
> There are no longer recycling facilities for overhead transparencies within Australia.<br />
2. Continually improve compliance with<br />
environmental legislation and conformance<br />
to ISO 14001:2004.<br />
> Review <strong>of</strong> Dangerous Goods signage complete; installation <strong>of</strong> signage to occur in 2008.<br />
> Regular <strong>report</strong>s on results <strong>of</strong> EMS audits and regulators’ activity were provided to the Risk Management<br />
Committee.<br />
> Review <strong>of</strong> emergency response management completed. Additional spill control kits in place throughout<br />
Parkville campus and VCA.<br />
3. Improve environmental sustainability leadership<br />
and culture throughout the <strong>University</strong>.<br />
> A Staff Environment Advocates (SEAs) list has been reviewed and updated, approximately 90 staff on the list.<br />
Training session conducted for SEAs.<br />
> Two meetings for SEAs in <strong>2007</strong>, and regular direct communication, supplied information on objectives and<br />
targets and progress <strong>of</strong> sustainability projects.<br />
> A brief and plan were developed during <strong>2007</strong> with Marketing and Communication Division for an environment<br />
and sustainability campaign for implementation in 2008.<br />
> Reported on Tailloires Declaration progress to Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Innovation & Development).<br />
4. Provide high quality, consistent and practical<br />
environmental sustainability information<br />
and advice to the <strong>University</strong> community.<br />
> Gap Analysis <strong>of</strong> procedures between the EHS Manual and ISO 14001:2004 completed.<br />
> An EMS draft register for Environmental Aspects and Impacts was completed and published in <strong>2007</strong> for<br />
consultation with staff.<br />
> An EMS draft register for Legal and Other Obligations completed, to be published in 2008.<br />
> Network <strong>of</strong> key staff established in high risk areas.<br />
5. Reduce greenhouse gas emissions produced<br />
by the <strong>University</strong>.<br />
> Energy Efficiency progress <strong>report</strong> to be published in 2008.<br />
> Greenhouse Challenge Plus Programme papers ready for signing in 2008.<br />
