HIGH ACHIEVING STUDENTS<br />
VCA<br />
Matthew Saville, a graduate <strong>of</strong> the Victorian<br />
College <strong>of</strong> the Arts Film and Television<br />
School received several awards for his<br />
first feature film Noise. These included,<br />
Australian Film Critics Best Australian Film,<br />
Film Critics Circle <strong>of</strong> Australia, Best Film and<br />
Best Direction. Noise was also nominated<br />
for several Australian Film Institute Awards<br />
including Best Direction.<br />
Chancellor’s Prize<br />
The Chancellor’s Prize for excellence in PhD<br />
research was awarded to:<br />
> Dr John Papandriopoulos for his PhD<br />
thesis ‘Resource optimisation in multiuser<br />
communication networks’, which<br />
examines technology to make broadband<br />
up to 100 times faster.<br />
> Dr James Ryall for his research into the<br />
use <strong>of</strong> anti-asthmatic drugs to prevent<br />
muscle wasting associated with old age.<br />
> Dr Gaye Williams for her innovative<br />
study into insightful student thinking<br />
in mathematics classrooms, using<br />
video-stimulated post-lesson student<br />
interviews to analyse learning in<br />
<strong>Melbourne</strong> and the USA.<br />
> Dr Lutti Assyaunkanie, the first<br />
international student to win the<br />
Chancellor’s Prize. His thesis explored<br />
the development <strong>of</strong> Islamic thought in<br />
Indonesia<br />
Victorian Rhodes Scholars<br />
Commerce and Science student John<br />
Feddersen was awarded the <strong>2007</strong> Victorian<br />
Rhodes Scholarship.<br />
Medicine and Arts student, Kate Robson,<br />
was selected as an Australia at Large<br />
Rhodes Scholar. She will undertake an<br />
innovative project in the history <strong>of</strong> medicine<br />
at Oxford’s Wellcome Unit.<br />
Sir John Monash Award<br />
Arts/Science graduate David Clark won a<br />
General Sir John Monash Award. He will<br />
use the highly prestigious postgraduate<br />
award to pursue a Masters in Public<br />
Administration at Harvard <strong>University</strong>.<br />
<strong>2007</strong> Premier’s Award<br />
> Dr Helen Cox won the <strong>2007</strong> Premier’s<br />
Award for Medical Research for her PhD<br />
research into drug resistant tuberculosis.<br />
> Dr Robert MacInnis was commended in<br />
the <strong>2007</strong> Premier’s Awards for Medical<br />
Research for his PhD research into the<br />
correlation between waist measurement<br />
and cancer susceptibility.<br />

Graduates Awarded all Six <strong>2007</strong><br />
Cambridge Australia Trust<br />
Scholarships to Study at<br />
Cambridge<br />
Three <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Melbourne</strong> recipients will<br />
pursue PhDs at Cambridge:<br />
> Joanne Wallis (Poynton Cambridge<br />
Scholarship) – International Studies;<br />
> Olivia Meehan (Cambridge Australia Trust<br />
Scholarship) – the History <strong>of</strong> Arts; and<br />
> Andrew Keniry (Cambridge Australia Trust<br />
Scholarship) – Molecular Biology.<br />
And the other three recipients will pursue<br />
masters:<br />
> Maurice Chiodo (Patrick Moore Masters<br />
Scholarship) – Mathematics;<br />
> Kylie Stevenson (Patrick Moore Masters<br />
Scholarship) – Education; and<br />
> Nick Owens (Cambridge Commonwealth<br />
Trust Scholarship) – Engineering for<br />
Sustainable Development.<br />
Harold Wright Scholarship<br />
Master <strong>of</strong> Art Curatorship student, Kathleen<br />
Kiernan, won the Harold Wright Scholarship<br />
to study collections at the British Museum.<br />
Pfizer Neuroscience Grant<br />
PhD Candidates Natasha Brown, Dr Sarah<br />
Wilson and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Ingrid Scheffer, were<br />
awarded the Pfizer Neuroscience Grant,<br />
<strong>2007</strong> for research into autism.<br />
PhD graduate, Thomas Munro, was<br />
awarded the Royal Australian Chemical<br />
Institute’s <strong>2007</strong> Cornforth Medal for the<br />
best PhD thesis submitted in a branch <strong>of</strong><br />
Chemistry each year. He is now a Research<br />
Fellow at Harvard Medical School.<br />
Law Students Win the Global<br />
Mooting Competition<br />
A team from the <strong>Melbourne</strong> Law School<br />
– David Heaton, Chian Kee, Sarah Kemeny<br />
and Elizabeth Sheargold – won the<br />
European Law Students’ Association global<br />
moot court on World Trade Organization<br />
law in Geneva.<br />
Micros<strong>of</strong>t Next-Gen PC<br />
Architecture student John Leung won<br />
the $US25,000 Micros<strong>of</strong>t Next-Gen PC<br />
Design Competition Chairman’s Award for<br />
his ‘Made in China’ computer. The PC,<br />
designed to give Chinese easier and better<br />
computer access, resembles an Asianstyle<br />
food platter and is controlled by<br />
chopstick-like input on a touch screen. It<br />
links to remote servers via the 4G mobile<br />
phone network.<br />
SIFE Finals<br />
A team <strong>of</strong> <strong>Melbourne</strong> students reached<br />
the national finals <strong>of</strong> the global Students in<br />
Free Enterprise (SIFE) competition in New<br />
York. More than 60 students from a range<br />
<strong>of</strong> faculties were involved in five projects<br />
designed to provide a positive economic<br />
and social impact on disadvantaged groups<br />
in the community.<br />
Unicapitol Washington<br />
Program Internships<br />
Students Clare Ashby, Michael Ng, Megan<br />
Bainbridge and Sylvia Gaston were all<br />
awarded internships in the prestigious Uni-<br />
Capitol Washington Program.<br />
