HIGH ACHIEVING STAFF<br />

<strong>2007</strong> Victoria Prize<br />

Eminent neurosurgeon, Laureate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor<br />

Colin Masters was awarded the prestigious<br />

<strong>2007</strong> Victoria Prize. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Masters was<br />

recognised for his achievements in isolating<br />

and characterising elements <strong>of</strong> the primary<br />

pathway causing Alzheimer’s disease.<br />

Victoria Fellowships<br />

Luke Connal, Bryony Coleman and<br />

Erinna Lee won prestigious <strong>2007</strong> Victoria<br />

Fellowships worth $18,000, recognising<br />

their creative, innovative approach to<br />

scientific research.<br />

Australia Fellowships<br />

Four <strong>of</strong> nine Australia Fellowships were<br />

awarded to leading medical researchers at<br />

the <strong>University</strong>. The fellowships, each worth<br />

$4 million over five years were awarded to:<br />

> Laureate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Sam Berkovic AM,<br />

Department <strong>of</strong> Medicine (Austin Health<br />

and Northern Health) and Director <strong>of</strong><br />

the Epilepsy Research Centre – for work<br />

on the integration <strong>of</strong> high-level clinical<br />

medicine, molecular genetics and cuttingedge<br />

neuro-imaging in the causes and<br />

treatment <strong>of</strong> epilepsy.<br />

> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor John Hopper, Director <strong>of</strong><br />

Research at the Centre for Molecular,<br />

Environmental, Genetic and Analytic<br />

Epidemiology and Director <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Australian Twin Registry, School<br />

<strong>of</strong> Population Health – for research<br />

investigating the links between genes,<br />

the environment, and breast cancer,<br />

colorectal cancer and prostate cancer.<br />

> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Doug Hilton, Head <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Molecular Medicine Division at the<br />

Walter and Eliza Hall Institute <strong>of</strong> Medical<br />

Research – for research into the molecular<br />

basis for the onset and progression <strong>of</strong><br />

cancer and other diseases.<br />

> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Alan Cowman, Head <strong>of</strong><br />

Infection and Immunity at the Walter and<br />

Eliza Institute <strong>of</strong> Medical Research – for<br />

the development <strong>of</strong> new treatments and<br />

vaccines for the prevention <strong>of</strong> malaria.<br />

Klaus Joachim Zulch Prize<br />

<strong>2007</strong> Fellows<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Graeme Clark received the <strong>2007</strong><br />

Klaus Joachim Zulch prize for his research<br />

into neuroscience and the Cochlear implant,<br />

which gives deaf people the ability to<br />

hear. The Zulch prize from the Max Planck<br />

Institute is Germany’s highest award in<br />

neuroscience<br />

Fulbright Scholarship<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essor in Microbiology and Immunology,<br />

Francis Carbone, was awarded a <strong>2007</strong><br />

Fulbright Senior Scholar Scholarship to<br />

travel to the Scripps Institute in California.<br />

He will continue research into immune<br />

response to viral infection.<br />

NES Award<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>essorial Fellow, David Solomon, has<br />

been awarded the NES Award for Novel<br />

Engineering Solutions from the Institution<br />

<strong>of</strong> Chemical Engineers for his part in<br />

developing the first plastic banknote.<br />

WooDWard Medal awarded to<br />

a Historian and a Physicist<br />

> Associate Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Antonia Finnane<br />

(School <strong>of</strong> Historical Studies) was<br />

awarded the <strong>2007</strong> Woodward Medal<br />

in Humanities and Social Sciences in<br />

recognition <strong>of</strong> her book, Speaking <strong>of</strong><br />

Yangzhou: A Chinese City, 1550–1850.<br />

in Science and Technology in recognition<br />

<strong>of</strong> an outstanding body <strong>of</strong> published work<br />

exploring the applications <strong>of</strong> quantum<br />

mechanics to computing and information<br />

processing.<br />

Royal Society Fellows<br />

Two <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>’s most eminent<br />

scientists have been appointed as Fellows<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Royal Society in London.<br />

> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Sam Berkovic, Director <strong>of</strong> the<br />

<strong>University</strong>’s Epilepsy Research Centre,<br />

was recognised for his discoveries<br />

relating to familial forms <strong>of</strong> epilepsy,<br />

leading to a complete overhaul <strong>of</strong> their<br />

clinical classification and providing new<br />

insights into their underlying biology.<br />

> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor David Boger from Chemical and<br />

Biomolecular Engineering, was reconised<br />

for his discovery <strong>of</strong> elastic liquids,<br />

subsequently named ‘Boger fluids’.<br />
