Policy and Communication; Conservation,<br />

Restoration and Landscape Management;<br />

and Sustainable Cities, Sustainable<br />

Regions. The success <strong>of</strong> the program<br />

has been demonstrated by a dramatic<br />

increase in enrolments during <strong>2007</strong>, from<br />

both domestic and international students.<br />

The OEP has continued to promote<br />

sustainability by involving its academic<br />

staff and students in policy formation and<br />

advice to government, local government<br />

and industry.<br />

External Conferences<br />

The <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Melbourne</strong> was<br />

represented and participated at the<br />

annual Australasian Campuses Towards<br />

Sustainability (ACTS) conference. Three<br />

staff members were sponsored by the EHS<br />

Unit to attend the Conference. Following<br />

the Conference a <strong>report</strong> was presented to<br />

Staff Environment Advocates.<br />

New large initiatives focussing on the<br />

environment have also been launched in<br />

<strong>2007</strong>. In April, the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Melbourne</strong><br />

and Monash <strong>University</strong> joined forces in<br />

Uniwater, a major research-driven response<br />

to the current water crisis, in which each<br />

university will contribute more than $1<br />

million over three years. The School<br />

<strong>of</strong> Forest and Ecosystem Science also<br />

began a $1 million program <strong>of</strong> research for<br />

<strong>Melbourne</strong> Water to look at the potential<br />

impacts <strong>of</strong> bushfire on our water supply<br />

catchments.<br />

2. Freedom <strong>of</strong> Information<br />

In the period from 1 July 2006 to 30 June<br />

<strong>2007</strong>, 24 new requests for documents were<br />

received. These comprised 10 requests<br />

for personal documents and 14 requests<br />

for non-personal documents. Access in<br />

full was given to nine requests, partial<br />

access to seven requests, in two cases the<br />

advice was that no documents were found,<br />

one request was denied and five were<br />

unresolved within the <strong>report</strong>ing period.<br />

The Principal Officer <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong> is the<br />

Vice-Chancellor. The Senior-Vice Principal<br />

is the formally designated Freedom <strong>of</strong><br />

Information Manager <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>.<br />

All formal requests for access to<br />

documents <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong>, under the<br />

provisions <strong>of</strong> the Freedom <strong>of</strong> Information<br />

A request for access to a document <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>University</strong> should include sufficient<br />

information about that document to enable<br />

it to be identified. Assistance will be<br />

provided by an <strong>of</strong>ficer <strong>of</strong> the <strong>University</strong><br />

in cases where details supplied about<br />

a document are not sufficiently clear to<br />

identify that document.<br />

Charges for access to documents <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>University</strong> under the provisions <strong>of</strong><br />

the Freedom <strong>of</strong> Information Act are in<br />

accordance with the standard provisions<br />

<strong>of</strong> the Freedom <strong>of</strong> Information (Access<br />

Charges) Regulation 1993.<br />

A wide range <strong>of</strong> smaller systems has<br />

needs <strong>of</strong> <strong>University</strong> Administration, faculties,<br />

academic departments and students.<br />
