The material shall be placed within the <strong>for</strong>med box <strong>and</strong> spread, without unduly disturbing the subgrade,<br />

to the required pr<strong>of</strong>iles working from the centre towards the edges.<br />

The material shall be water bound, spread <strong>and</strong> compacted to a minimum dry density ratio <strong>of</strong> 95%<br />

when tested in accordance with AS1289 E2.1.<br />

The final sub-grade shall have a minimum thickness <strong>of</strong> 200mm but 400mm in Gilgai soils.<br />

The completed sub-base shall be approved by the Engineer prior to the placing <strong>of</strong> the base course.<br />

R3.3 Base<br />

The base course shall be constructed <strong>of</strong> crushed rock base to the width shown on the drawings.<br />

The base material shall be spread from an approved tipping truck in an even <strong>and</strong> continuous layer.<br />

The base material shall be watered to the optimum moisture content, graded to the required pr<strong>of</strong>ile<br />

with a minimum <strong>of</strong> cut <strong>and</strong> uni<strong>for</strong>mly compacted to a minimum dry density ratio <strong>of</strong> 98% when tested in<br />

accordance with AS1289 E2.1.<br />

Any part <strong>of</strong> the base course which is below the required level after consolidation shall be scarified to a<br />

depth <strong>of</strong> 75mm, made up with fresh base material <strong>and</strong> re-compacted.<br />

The final base course shall have a minimum thickness <strong>of</strong> 200mm <strong>and</strong> be free from bony areas <strong>and</strong><br />

thin layers <strong>of</strong> finer material.<br />

The completed base course shall be approved by the Engineer prior to the application <strong>of</strong> the primer<br />

seal.<br />

R4<br />

SURFACE COURSE<br />

R4.1 General<br />

The bituminous surfacing <strong>of</strong> <strong>road</strong>s shall be a primer seal <strong>of</strong> bitumen emulsion <strong>and</strong> 7mm aggregate<br />

<strong>and</strong> a wearing course <strong>of</strong> a dense graded 10mm size Asphalt (Hotmixed) laid to a minimum thickness<br />

<strong>of</strong> 25mm unless otherwise specified on the drawings.<br />

Intersections shall have a wearing course <strong>of</strong> dense graded 10mm size asphalt (Hot mixed)<br />

intersection mix unless otherwise specified on the drawings.<br />

The Contractor shall notify the Engineer at least 48 hours in advance <strong>of</strong> the intended sealing or<br />

surfacing <strong>works</strong> <strong>and</strong> shall submit the proposed seal design <strong>for</strong> approval.<br />

R4.2 Spray Seals<br />

R4.2.1 Primer Seal<br />

The grade <strong>and</strong> application rate <strong>of</strong> the binder shall in accordance with the appropriate seal design <strong>and</strong><br />

confirmed by the Contractor after the inspection <strong>of</strong> the completed base course. Generally the binder<br />

will be bitumen emulsion but may be cut back hot bitumen.<br />
