R4.2.7 Finish<br />

The completed seal shall produce a well bonded uni<strong>for</strong>m surface free from over-sprayed, undersprayed<br />

or under-covered areas <strong>and</strong> an excessive quantity <strong>of</strong> loose aggregate.<br />

The completed seal may be inspected by the Engineer <strong>and</strong> no sealing plant shall be removed from<br />

the site until the work has been approved.<br />

R4.3 Asphalt (Hot Mix) Surface<br />

R4.3.1 Delivery<br />

All delivery vehicles shall be in good mechanical condition. Vehicle bodies shall be such that the<br />

asphalt cannot leak or spill <strong>and</strong> shall be fitted with covers <strong>of</strong> such size, thickness <strong>and</strong> material as to<br />

protect the load from the weather.<br />

When directed by the Engineer, or where the lead exceeds 110km, or where the ambient temperature<br />

is below 10ΕC <strong>and</strong> the lead exceeds 50km, the vehicle body <strong>and</strong> the cover shall be suitably insulated.<br />

The interior <strong>of</strong> each vehicle body shall be cleaned <strong>of</strong> all <strong>for</strong>eign materials <strong>and</strong> lightly lubricated as<br />

necessary with a slightly detergent solution or other approved material. All <strong>for</strong>eign material <strong>and</strong><br />

excess lubrication shall be removed prior to loading the vehicle.<br />

Delivery dockets showing the following written in<strong>for</strong>mation shall be available to the Engineer.<br />

• Quantity <strong>of</strong> material.<br />

• The date <strong>and</strong> time <strong>of</strong> loading.<br />

• The name <strong>of</strong> the supplier.<br />

• The identification number <strong>of</strong> the vehicle.<br />

• The size <strong>of</strong> the asphalt <strong>and</strong> the location reference <strong>of</strong> the plant at which the asphalt<br />

was manufactured.<br />

R4.3.2 Construction Plant<br />

Sprayers:<br />

Sprayers shall be capable <strong>of</strong> spraying the tack coat uni<strong>for</strong>mly through jets in a spray bar at the<br />

desired rate <strong>of</strong> application up to a width <strong>of</strong> 2.5m. The spray bar shall be fitted with end shields.<br />

Pressure type sprayers issued <strong>for</strong> spraying bitumen emulsion shall be capable <strong>of</strong> operating at a<br />

continuous pressure <strong>of</strong> 175kPa.<br />

Pavers:<br />

Pavers shall be self-propelled <strong>and</strong> shall be equipped with hoppers <strong>and</strong> distributing screws <strong>of</strong> the<br />

counter rotation type to place the asphalt evenly in front <strong>of</strong> the screed. Means shall be provided to<br />

heat the screed uni<strong>for</strong>mly over its full width.<br />
