Abstracted Florals on Textured Canvas<br />

FEE $322.53<br />

Discover various techniques of texturing canvas for added depth and<br />

interest in your paintings. These techniques will involve the use of gel<br />

mediums and paper. Value, colour and composition will be addressed,<br />

as well as colour mixing and the importance of center of interest to draw<br />

the viewer into your paintings. The use of acrylic paints and mixing<br />

directly on the canvas to bring out the vibrancy of the colours, as well as<br />

the use of brushes and rags to enhance the paintings will be informative<br />

and exciting. Whether you are a beginning or seasoned student, instruction<br />

will be suitable. Individual attention combined with classroom<br />

critique will guide your learning process. You will have an opportunity to<br />

work with props and still life as well as utilize photography to learn how<br />

to “see”. There will be a $25 material fee payable to the instructor.<br />

Encaustic Mixed Media & Collage<br />

Encaustic, an ancient beeswax-based technique, is currently embraced<br />

by contemporary mixed media artists. Learn how to integrate encaustic<br />

techniques into your mixed media work from textile to found sculpture,<br />

from ceramic to paper, or beyond. There will be a $100 material fee<br />

payable to the instructor.<br />

Garden Design<br />

A garden is an artful space. Many elements and principles of garden<br />

design mirror those in visual art forms. Texture, balance, depth,<br />

dominance, space and most importantly colour are only some of the<br />

aspects that require attention when planning the perfect garden. Add<br />

to these the environmental considerations – water needs, sunshine,<br />

bullying plants, pest tolerance and the age of the gardener – and you<br />

have a basketful of choices to make. Learn the basic rules of garden<br />

design along with how and when to break the rules in order to make<br />

your garden a stunning work of art.<br />

Jewellery – Mixed Media<br />

Instruction will enable you to work with a wide range of materials to<br />

create several pieces of mixed media jewellery. Techniques will include<br />

hammering, shaping and texturing metal plate, wire-wrapping, and<br />

the creation of effective jewellery design using various beads, wire<br />

and stones. In addition, micro-torch work, simple etching and basic<br />

enameling will be taught. Bring small, fun objects or choose from the<br />

instructor’s collection of beach glass, pebbles, semi-precious beads,<br />

small found pieces, and silver-plated and copper materials to make<br />

earrings, rings, bracelets, and pendants. There will be a $60 material<br />

fee payable to the instructor.<br />

Life Drawing and Painting<br />

Learn how to have your figurative work flow from your hand. This<br />

extensive course, working with the life model, will address your<br />

personal artistic development. Instruction in drawing the figure, drawing<br />

techniques and applying colour theory will be a strong foundation for<br />

continuing artistic practice in drawing and painting. You will explore<br />

new materials, strive for mastery of media with which you are familiar,<br />

and originate a life drawing project that addresses your own personal<br />

technical or conceptual problems. Drawings and paintings by a variety<br />

of artists will be available for viewing and reference. Upon completion<br />

you will have the ability to use life drawing as the basis for a process<br />

of ongoing investigation that will continue to build skill, perception and<br />

ease, as well as provide a foundation for expression in drawing and<br />

painting.<br />

Wood Bending<br />

Please note: This course is located at Michael Fortune’s studio in<br />

Lakefield, Ontario. Details on material list.<br />

The ability to bend wood to exact shapes opens up an incredible range<br />

of exciting possibilities for woodworkers. Chair parts, table aprons,<br />

cabinet doors, sports equipment and musical instruments can be<br />

made with precisely bent curved components. This course will provide<br />

the information and hands-on experience you need to apply the most<br />

appropriate bending technique for any application. Steam bending,<br />

laminating, vacuum forming, and hot pipe bending will all be demonstrated,<br />

and band saw curves will be explained. Choosing the right<br />

wood species, how to cure and stabilize bent parts and the methods<br />

for hand working or safely machining curves will also be covered. Each<br />

wood bending workstation will remain set up enabling you to hone your<br />

newfound skills or continue to push the limits of the various techniques.<br />

All of the wood bending set ups can be duplicated inexpensively in your<br />

own workshop. “If you can create a shape with a strip of paper without<br />

creasing it or tearing it, you can bend a piece of wood to the same<br />

shape.” – Michael Fortune. There will be a $40 material fee payable to<br />

the instructor.<br />

Michael Fortune designs and makes furniture with very few straight<br />

lines. He has written extensively on wood bending techniques and has<br />

demonstrated various wood bending techniques to a packed house<br />

at almost every Furniture Society Conference. Michael also conducts<br />

seminars on wood bending for the Woodworking Shows in cities across<br />

the United States.<br />
