<strong>Methuen</strong> <strong>Master</strong> <strong>Plan</strong> 2007<br />

GOAL PFS-2: Continue to provide excellence in education, accommodate increasing<br />

enrollments and support learning with an appropriately designed school environment.<br />

Objectives:<br />

• Ensure that the high school is an appropriately designed school that supports state-<strong>of</strong>-the-art learning.<br />

• Ensure that the public schools are able to accommodate growing enrollments while keeping to small class size goals.<br />

Strategies:<br />

PFS-2.1: Renovate or build a new high school.<br />

PFS-2.2: Support the Superintendent’s Task Force in their efforts to develop more accurate student<br />

enrollment projections. Study various options to determine how to alleviate perceived<br />

overcrowding at the elementary schools; options include:<br />

• New elementary school<br />

• Re-organize grades so that all Kindergarten is clustered together in a separate<br />

building<br />

• Re-organize grades to include a middle school<br />

GOAL PFS-3: Respond to accommodate a growing elderly population<br />

Objectives:<br />

• Support the Council on Aging in its efforts to accommodate growing numbers <strong>of</strong> seniors.<br />

• Meet the medical needs <strong>of</strong> the elderly population.<br />

• Support the provision <strong>of</strong> affordable senior housing<br />

• Expand affordable transportation options for seniors and handicapped individuals.<br />

• Support the Senior Center in its efforts to expand and transform the services it provides to meet the different needs <strong>of</strong><br />

baby boomer elders.<br />

Strategies:<br />

PFS-3.1: Identify potential sites for a satellite senior center to be used primarily for medical purposes<br />

(e.g. clinic).<br />

PFS-3.2: Consider developing town-owned/managed elderly housing.<br />

PFS-3.3: Work with the Merrimack Valley Regional Transit Authority and/or the Northern Essex<br />

Elder Transportation program<br />

PFS-3.4: Renovate the Senior Center in order to provide more programming in the areas <strong>of</strong> physical<br />

fitness and medical services and to project a different image through a more modern<br />

aesthetic.<br />
