TRAVEL PATTERNS<br />
Approximately 4,000 residents live and work in <strong>Methuen</strong>. The <strong>City</strong>’s most notable employers<br />
include Holy Family Hospital & Medical Center and the <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Methuen</strong>. The <strong>City</strong> <strong>of</strong> Lawrence<br />
and the Town <strong>of</strong> Andover succeed <strong>Methuen</strong> as primary employment localities for <strong>Methuen</strong><br />
residents.<br />
<strong>Methuen</strong> residents spend more time commuting now than in 1990. The number <strong>of</strong> residents with<br />
commutes under 20 minutes has decreased, while the number <strong>of</strong> residents with commutes over 20<br />
minutes in length has increased significantly.<br />
For <strong>Methuen</strong> residents, the location <strong>of</strong> their workplace is shifting (see Figure 19). Fewer residents<br />
work in <strong>Methuen</strong> now than in 1990, a decrease <strong>of</strong> over 3%, and more residents travel to Boston,<br />
Newburyport, Newbury, Salisbury, and other destinations 20+ miles away. The percentage <strong>of</strong><br />
residents commuting to Boston increased by close to 1.5% (300 more residents) between 1990 and<br />
2000, while other destinations decreased or stayed about the same. By the same token, more<br />
residents work nearby in Salem, New Hampshire, about 5 miles away, than in 1990 (327 more).<br />
