GOAL 2: PROTECT NATURAL AREAS THAT ARE OF UNIQUE ENVIRONMENTAL<br />

OBJECTIVE: ·Create conservation areas to protect natural features, endangered<br />

species, habitat, and water supplies.<br />

Develop system <strong>of</strong> open space greenbelts along wildlife, river, and/or wetland corridors.<br />

Develop riverwalk along Spicket River connecting Organ Hall and lower Broadway area to Spicket Falls.<br />

Establish <strong>Methuen</strong> link to regional Merrimack River trail. 2002<br />

Acquire greenbelts and conservation land through direct or partial (easement)<br />

acquisition.<br />

Encourage open space regulatory mechanism that provides alternatives for subdivisions<br />

without density bonuses and with specific open space standards. ?<br />

Preserve greenbelt along Hawkes Brook, <strong>Methuen</strong> upland <strong>of</strong>f Washington Street, and On-going<br />

Harris Brook.<br />

Work with public and quasi-public organization devoted to open space conservation to<br />

increase their ability to assist in land acquisition. (Merrimack River Watershed Council, On-going<br />

Essex County Greenbelt, etc.)<br />

Encourage protection <strong>of</strong> farmland through Chap. 61 agreements<br />
