In collaboration with<br />
the USAID missions <strong>and</strong><br />
education leaders <strong>in</strong> five<br />
countries, LearnL<strong>in</strong>k is implement<strong>in</strong>g<br />
computer-mediated<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essional development<br />
activities that take<br />
advantage <strong>of</strong> the potential<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>ICT</strong>s to improve tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>and</strong> support services for<br />
teachers. Two African countries<br />
are <strong>in</strong>volved, namely<br />
Namibia <strong>and</strong> Ug<strong>and</strong>a, <strong>and</strong><br />
the activities <strong>in</strong> each country<br />
are as follows:<br />
Namibia:<br />
The Computer Assisted<br />
Teacher Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g (CATT)<br />
project is part <strong>of</strong> a greater<br />
plan to improve teacher<br />
tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g nationwide. The<br />
project is a collaboration<br />
among USAID/Namibia,<br />
AED/LearnL<strong>in</strong>k, <strong>and</strong> educational<br />
leaders <strong>in</strong> Namibia,<br />
<strong>and</strong> <strong>in</strong>cludes the follow<strong>in</strong>g<br />
components:<br />
Ù Develop<strong>in</strong>g computer assisted<br />
tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g courses for<br />
teachers, facilitators, <strong>and</strong><br />
other educators<br />
Ù Construct<strong>in</strong>g a communications<br />
network l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g<br />
educators through the<br />
Internet<br />
Ù Design<strong>in</strong>g prototype<br />
curriculum-based tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
materials for primary<br />
school students<br />
Ù Introduc<strong>in</strong>g teach<strong>in</strong>g/<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g technology concepts<br />
<strong>in</strong>to the national<br />
policy dialogue<br />
Ug<strong>and</strong>a:<br />
The CONNECT-ED (Connectivity<br />
for Educator<br />
Development) project is<br />
designed to improve pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
development for<br />
primary school teachers<br />
with a focus on computerassisted<br />
teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Multimedia teacher tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
laboratories <strong>in</strong> four<br />
Primary Teacher Tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
Colleges <strong>in</strong> both rural <strong>and</strong><br />
urban areas give teachers<br />
access to their tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
curriculum through computer-mediated<br />
learn<strong>in</strong>g<br />
environments <strong>and</strong> digital<br />
library resources. A broad<br />
range <strong>of</strong> activities <strong>in</strong>volv<strong>in</strong>g<br />
computers <strong>and</strong> connectivity<br />
are be<strong>in</strong>g explored to determ<strong>in</strong>e<br />
the most effective<br />
approaches.<br />
