with author<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>of</strong>tware. Multimedia courseware may be presented<br />

on a CD-ROM for use on a st<strong>and</strong>-alone personal computer or over the<br />

Worldwide Web through networked computer term<strong>in</strong>als.<br />

The readily available <strong>and</strong> robust Web browser s<strong>of</strong>tware <strong>and</strong> tools for<br />

Web s<strong>of</strong>tware development have made it relatively easy to design<br />

customized web environments for education <strong>and</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g. These<br />

environments may comb<strong>in</strong>e courseware resources (hypertext pages,<br />

multimedia) <strong>and</strong> schedul<strong>in</strong>g aids with tools allow<strong>in</strong>g tutors, tra<strong>in</strong>ers,<br />

<strong>and</strong> other participants to <strong>in</strong>teract both asynchronously (email, computer<br />

conferenc<strong>in</strong>g) <strong>and</strong> synchronously (audio <strong>and</strong> video l<strong>in</strong>ks). The environments<br />

can be configured <strong>in</strong> different ways to support different types <strong>of</strong><br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g activity (<strong>in</strong>dividual, small group, plenary). They can also conta<strong>in</strong><br />

aids for <strong>in</strong>structors for course design, class management, knowledge<br />

structur<strong>in</strong>g, test<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>and</strong> evaluation.<br />
