challenge 2006 Challenge is an annual publication that documents the DBA Inclusive Design Challenge, a collaboration between the Royal College of Art and the Design Business Association (DBA). The DBA Inclusive Design Challenge is organised by Inclusive Business RCA. This is a knowledge transfer programme at the Royal College of Art that aims to encourage innovation in products and services that include the needs of disabled people. Inclusive Business RCA is based within the Helen Hamlyn Research Centre at the Royal College of Art, a centre for inclusive design, and forms part of InnovationRCA, the College’s innovation network for business. Julia Cassim Editor, Challenge 2006 Senior Research Fellow, Helen Hamlyn Research Centre >editorial When the first DBA Inclusive Design Challenge was held in 2000, little did we realise the impact it would have. It was intended as a simple, designer-friendly mechanism to transfer knowledge to the design community about the inclusive design process and show how interaction with disabled people could be a direct route to mainstream product and service innovation. Six years on, the Challenge has resulted in 33 beacon projects in inclusive design, involving over 300 designers. Sponsored for the past two years by the disability charity Scope, this joint initiative between the Design Business Association (DBA) and the Helen Hamlyn Research Centre at the Royal College of Art has also developed new and exciting iterations in different contexts in the UK and abroad. It all started with a request in January 2005 from the design firm Sieberthead for help in devising a three-day innovation workshop for staff of the multinational giant Reckitt Benkiser. Sieberthead had taken part in the Challenge twice and had been impressed by the creative stimulus, rapid knowledge transfer and internal teamwork that the experience engendered. They felt that this was directly transferable to other contexts and would benefit not only
