There still remains the problem
of time, however, and inclusive
design is perceived as being timeconsuming.
To show that this is not
necessarily the case and to ensure
that the lessons learned are pertinent,
the DBA Inclusive Design
Challenge takes place within the
time frame of a typical design
project of around four months.
Some projects are even shorter
and we wondered whether there
could be a quicker way to jumpstart
the inclusive design process
and generate innovative ideas or
at the very least alert design
managers to the advantages of
an inclusive approach.
In 2005, the Inclusive Business
RCA programme ran a three-day
workshop for Reckitt Benkiser and a
24 Hour Inclusive Design Challenge
as part of the Include conference
at the Royal College of Art. Their
evident success suggested that
one could significantly change
corporate hearts and minds and
inspire designers even within an
attenuated time frame.

So we have refined the
Challenge model as a knowledge
transfer mechanism to explore
inclusive design techniques with
design and industry, using feedback
from designers over the past six
years to evolve a flexible workshop
module for different contexts. The
Challenge model contains the key
elements of pertinent information,
lateral inspiration and the development
of presentation skills.
The four workshops described
in this section road-tested the
Challenge model under different
circumstances and with different
participants, these ranged from
SMEs in the disability aids and
equipment sector and Occupation
Thearapists (OTs) in the UK to
industrial design students in Israel
and Human Computer Interaction
(HCI) students and those of other
disciplines in Japan. The flexible
format generated exciting results.
