research and just four months to deliver their
inclusive responses to the needs and aspirations
of the disabled users with whom they
worked. A panel of experts judged the work
in December 2005. Then came an agonising
two-month wait for the result, which was
announced on 22 February 2006, before a
capacity audience drawn from the worlds of
design, disability, government and business
at the Royal College of Art.
The challenge to the teams was twofold:
design a mainstream product, service,
environment, print, on-line or other
communication which deliberately includes
the needs and aspirations of currently
excluded groups of people, or create
a design with young disabled people
specifically in mind, focused on their everyday
lives in the mainstream. In either case,
creating business opportunities for small and
medium sized enterprises (SMEs) and
larger companies would be an advantage.
