OVERVIEW Twelve more months after the 2nd meeting of the Scientific Committee. The Scientific Committee (see Appendix 3) held its last session in November 2009 in Grenoble. The SC duly created its report with strong recommendations for the projects to be funded via the Chairs of Excellence. The calls were accordingly modified and the present ones ought to the selection of new comers with recognized ERC-junior levels or to support ERC-considered junior candidates and to attract and select outstanding PhD applicants. Another statement made by the Scientific Committee was that the results obtained thanks to the Nanosciences Foundation’s support were not sufficiently highlighted, which was not “an optimized approach” to stimulate the interest of partners in the frame of fundraising. This third issue of the scientific activity report introduces significant changes in its presentation to fit the requirements expressed by the Scientific Committee. As a tentative response to the Scientific Committee report, it appears relevant to begin this report by underlining the benefits built up in Grenoble thanks to the Nanosciences Foundation’s programs, to highlight outstanding results as independent brief reports (which will be integrated in a booklet later on) in addition to the scientific reports of each working group 4
OUTSTANDING BENEFITS CATALYZED BY THE NANOSCIENCES FOUNDATION ACTIONS Three laureates of Chairs of Excellence on their way to establish themselves in Grenoble. Mairbek CHSHIEV and Don MARTIN are very likely to be hired as full professor by the University Joseph Fourier. Mairbek CHSHIEV Thanks to the 2007 Chair of Excellence program, Mairbek CHSHIEV, 40, came to Grenoble full time to support the important field of Spintronics, very active at INAC, NEEL and other labs. All were strong on the experimental side, but weak on the theory side – only stimulated by visiting professors on sabbatical. It has been obvious for these laboratories to share a strategy to reinforce this line of research and thanks to the Nanosciences Foundation’s frame this was made possible within an appropriate time-scale, quasi-impossible otherwise. Both the high quality of Mairbek’s work, clearly demonstrated over this three year period, and the reactivity of the UJF presidency will successfully settle a theoretical group with a large impact in this field. Familiar with Grenoble thanks to regular visits between 1998 and 2004, Mairbek had been in US for six years before he left his professorship in Alabama to join us. His recent papers address four issues both fundamental and of real impacts for devices fabricated by Crocus, a spin-off of SPINTEC and collaborators. Spin transfer: solving the back switching problem of the CROCUS MRAM How to take into account current non-homogeneities in MRAM and reading heads Improving the quality and the strength of the exchange coupling and perpendicular anisotropy by tuning oxidation Control of magnetic states of frustrated systems With his outstanding production of papers in high impact journals, his invited conferences, his involvement in three accepted ANR projects as Principal Investigator, plus 2 EU-strep … Mairbek CHSHIEV’s influence is deeply felt and appreciated in the Foundation’s laboratories. Albert FERT will welcome Mairbek for a short period to fill the gap between two salary supports in Grenoble. Donald MARTIN - Another profile, another route to join the University. Don MARTIN, 53, part time UJF professor is employed by the Foundation following the 2007 Chair of Excellence program. Professor on leave from University of Sydney, Don is also cofounder and Head of R&D at Seagull Technology Pty Ltd and more recently, partner in Synthelis SAS – a start-up from University Joseph Fourier created in mid-2010. Combining chemistry and biology, along with Philippe CINQUIN’s host group, they revitalized the concept of bio-fuel cell. Even though the idea dates from 2004, the dream to obtain in-vivo bio-fuel cells only became reality in 2010 thanks to two CNRS-UJF labs (DCM & TIMC). Implemented in the animal model, the first bio-fuel cells, (GBFC for Glucose Bio Fuel Cell), has been successfully demonstrated and thanks to technological breakthroughs, this kind of cells will allow a gain by a factor 50 invivo. ST Microelectronics is currently optimizing miniaturisation and power efficiency of GBFC. Pacemakers, insulin pumps, defibrillators are all accessible targets for this invention. (Source: UJF Dépêche N°31) The second step comes from the contribution of Don Martin as Principal Investigator and teamed with J-L. Lenormand, F. Boucher, and P. Cinquin. They worked on a bio-fuel cell using biomimetic membranes and NaCl for fuel. It leads to voltage up to a few tens of mV, which can match the energy demand of a new set of energy-demanding sphincters. These works were able to incubate larger programs which are supported by funding agencies (4 new ANR projects and 2 partnerships in the European Seventh Framework Program ‘FP7’), it generated 4 new collaborations across Grenoble and led to 4 invitations to international conferences.
