LAKE ERIE NORTH SHORE WATERSHED PLAN<br />

of the community and providing habitat for a diversity of flora and fauna. The <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong><br />

<strong>North</strong> <strong>Shore</strong> watershed will also support a quality of life and economic vitality that are<br />

fostered by a balance of sustainability and compatibility of surrounding land uses and the<br />

natural environment.<br />

<strong>Watershed</strong> Objectives<br />

Each watershed in the <strong>Niagara</strong> <strong>Peninsula</strong> Conservation Authority‟s jurisdiction is unique,<br />

having its own set of watershed planning objectives. The watershed objectives for the<br />

<strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>North</strong> <strong>Shore</strong> watershed have been categorized based on the watershed‟s<br />

resource components, including the social and built environment. In accordance with the<br />

Provincial Policy Statement [Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs (MMAH) 2005], Growth<br />

<strong>Plan</strong> for the Greater Golden Horseshoe [Ontario Ministry of Public Infrastructure<br />

Renewal (MPIR) 2006], Regional Policy <strong>Plan</strong> (RMN 2007a), Haldimand County Strategic<br />

Directions (2004) and public input, natural resources will be managed on a watershed<br />

scale in the <strong>Lake</strong> <strong>Erie</strong> <strong>North</strong> <strong>Shore</strong> watershed to:<br />

Water Resources<br />

improve, enhance, maintain or protect water quality and/or natural stream<br />

processes to support human uses and ecological functions in accordance with<br />

Provincial Water Quality Objectives;<br />

find an ecologically compatible balance between drain maintenance and function;<br />

ensure storm water management practices minimize storm water volumes and<br />

contaminant loads;<br />

recognize the role of natural features<br />

and pervious features in minimizing<br />

the impacts of flooding ;<br />

support healthy beaches for passive<br />

recreation;<br />

manage and mitigate flooding risks to<br />

human life and property within<br />

acceptable limits; and<br />

minimize erosion caused by human<br />

activity through the establishment<br />

and implementation of a<br />

comprehensive, priority based<br />

erosion control program<br />

Fish and Aquatic Habitat<br />

protect, enhance and restore populations of native species and their habitats;<br />

Research and recommend management plans for invasive species (flora and<br />

fauna); and<br />

incorporate management plans for Species at Risk into restoration<br />

Natural Heritage and Resources<br />

protect, enhance and restore the health, diversity and integrity of the natural<br />

heritage systems in the watershed;<br />

create, maintain, protect and enhance corridors and linkages to natural heritage<br />

systems in adjoining watersheds;<br />
