Spanish Courses (SPAN)<br />
Note: Semesters listed are when courses are normally offered. However, course offerings and<br />

Programs of Study<br />
SPAN 101 Elementary Spanish (4)<br />
Spring<br />
A study of the basic grammatical structure of the language and vocabulary, with intensive oral<br />
and listening practice. Students will learn to train the ear to begin to recognize the sounds and<br />
thereby understand the language. In addition, students will begin to learn some basic geographical,<br />
historical, and sociological facts in order to appreciate the language’s cultural context. This class<br />
may not be counted towards the major or minor in Spanish. Prerequisite: Placement exam result.<br />
SPAN 102 Elementary Spanish (4)<br />
Fall<br />
This continuation of Spanish 101 emphasizes speaking and understanding the language, while<br />
continuing to study the grammar. This class may not be counted towards the major or minor in<br />
Spanish. Prerequisite: Spanish 101 or placement.<br />
SPAN 201 Intermediate Spanish (3)<br />
Fall, Spring<br />
This continuation of the study of the Spanish language recycles and expands upon the basic<br />
grammatical structures and vocabulary groups learned at the 100 level. Emphasis is still placed<br />
on oral and aural communication. The skills for interpreting cultural products (film and texts) are<br />
introduced. Prerequisite: Spanish 102 or placement.<br />
SPAN 202 Intermediate Spanish (3)<br />
Fall, Spring<br />
This course culminates the introduction and practice of basic oral, aural, reading and writing<br />
skills. Prerequisite: Spanish 201 or placement.<br />
SPAN 302 Advanced Writing and Conversation (3)<br />
Fall<br />
The student will learn to write summaries, reports, and informal correspondence in conjunction<br />
with speaking activities in class and interactive conversational situations. The student will also<br />
increase listening comprehension as well as learn to write and narrate orally with detail in all<br />
tenses on topics related to interests and events of current, public, and personal relevance.<br />
Prerequisite: Spanish 202 (or SIS 252) or placement.<br />
SPAN 315 Culture and Civilization of Spanish America (3)<br />
Spring<br />
This course explores Spanish American cultural products and practices through an examination of<br />
history and essays in Spanish. Prerequisite: completion of or concurrent enrollment in Spanish 302.<br />
SPAN 317 Pre-Hispanic History and Art of Latin America (3)<br />
Fall<br />
A study of the history, art, artifacts, and cultures of the native peoples of North (Mexico),<br />
Central, and South America before the conquest by Spain in the 15-16th centuries. In addition, it<br />
will study the reasons why Spain posed itself to be the nation to conquest these great American<br />
civilizations. Prerequisite: Spanish 202<br />
