Admissions Criteria for Undergraduate Level Courses<br />

To be considered for the Adult Studies ESL or BL Program, one must meet the following criteria:<br />

1. A valid Illinois teacher certificate or concurrent enrollment in a certification program.<br />

2. Official grade transcripts<br />

Program requirements for English as a Second Language or Bilingual endorsement or approval:<br />

In addition to the admissions criteria above, approval to teach ESL or Bilingual in the context of a<br />

state-approved bilingual education program may be obtained by meeting the following requirements:<br />

For ESL<br />

• ESL clinical experience equal to 100 clock hours or three months teaching experience with<br />

ESL students.<br />

• Credits totaling 18 semester hours through the Adult Studies program.<br />

For Bilingual<br />

• Bilingual clinical experience totaling 100 clock hours or three months teaching experience<br />

in bilingual programs.<br />

• Successful completion of a target language proficiency examination in the non-English<br />

language to be taught.<br />

• Credits totaling 18 semester hours through the Adult Studies program.<br />

Admissions Criteria for Graduate Level Courses<br />

1. A valid Illinois teacher certificate<br />

2. Official grade transcripts<br />

3. GPA of at least 3.0 or permission of the ESL/BL Coordinator.<br />

4. Successfully complete a writing sample (done on <strong>Trinity</strong>’s campus)<br />

5. Submission of a previous research paper in APA format, minimum 8-10 pages in length.<br />

6. Complete an interview with Adult Studies ESL/BL Coordinator.<br />

ESL/BL Courses<br />

AEDU 225/525 Foundations of Teaching Bilingual/ESL (3)<br />

This course introduces students to an understanding of the historical, philosophical,<br />

socioeconomic, and educational issues that led to the formation of bilingual/ESL educational<br />

policies, programs, and services for culturally diverse populations. Current trends, issues, and<br />

research for bilingual/ESL classrooms will be examined. Aspects of language learning and<br />

acquisition theories as they pertain to bilingual/ESL will be included.<br />
