ASPED 217 Psychological Diagnosis of Exceptional Learners (3)<br />
This course introduces the procedures for educational assessment of exceptional children.<br />
Emphasis is placed upon informal assessment, observation, and criterion-referenced tests as well<br />
as norm-referenced tests designed for exceptional children.<br />
ASPED 319 Remediation of Language and Communication Disorders (3)<br />
This course is designed to address the unique characteristics of students ages 3 through 21 with<br />
language and communication disorders and to devise teaching strategies to meet their needs. The<br />
normal role and development of language, along with the implications for teaching students with<br />
impairments in these areas, will be included.<br />
ASPED 324 Teaching Students with High Incidence Disabilities – Ages 3 – 22 (4)<br />
The course is designed to provide regular education teachers an understanding of the<br />
characteristics of students from the ages of 3 years through age 22 with “high incidence”<br />
disabilities and methodologies and materials for teaching them. “High incidence” refers to<br />
disabilities which occur most often including learning disabilities, mild mental retardation, and<br />
mild social/emotional disorders and familiarity with a variety of teaching methods, strategies,<br />
and materials to meet the diverse needs of these challenged learners at the elementary, middle<br />
school and secondary school level. Historical perspectives, assessment procedures, theories, and<br />
their applications within the regular classroom will also be reviewed. Curriculum adaptations and<br />
modifications will be explored in the content areas, writing, social skills, improving organizational<br />
and study skills, communication with parents, and collaboration with professionals will also be<br />
emphasized.<br />
ASPED 325 Teaching Students with Low Incidence Disabilities – Ages 3 – 22 (4)<br />
This course designed to incorporate characteristics of students from the ages of 3 years through<br />
age 22 with “low incidence” disabilities and methodologies for teaching them. “Low incidence”<br />
refers to disabilities which occur least often. Included in this category are moderate to severe<br />
mental impairments, social/emotional disorders, autism, traumatic brain injury, and physical and<br />
other health impairments. Methods and materials will also be addressed in this course. Historical<br />
perspectives, assessment procedures, and theories will also be reviewed. Curriculum adaptations<br />
and modifications will be explored in the content areas, writing, social skills, improving<br />
organizational and study skills, communication with parents; Collaboration with professionals will<br />
also be emphasized.<br />
ASPED 330 Communication and Collaboration in Special Education:<br />
Strategies and Methods (3)<br />
This course explores the interpersonal and collaborative skills necessary for today’s educators in<br />
both regular education and special education settings, and for communication between the two<br />
disciplines. The course also helps equip students with specific special educations methods of<br />
instruction. Topics include interpersonal work relationships among school professionals, models<br />
