THEO 101 Introduction to the Bible (2)<br />

This course provides an introduction to the basic story of the Old and New Testaments, the main<br />

biblical characters, and the highlights of biblical history. It also offers a brief introduction to the<br />

major <strong>Christian</strong> traditions. The course is intended for those who desire this background before<br />

taking Theology 121 and 122.<br />

THeo 121 Biblical Foundations: The Old Testament and Its Fulfillment (3) Fall<br />

This course studies biblically derived foundational concepts which are basic to all <strong>Christian</strong><br />

academic work, including the Bible as divine revelation, creation, humans as God’s image bearers,<br />

the covenant, cultural mandate, sin and judgment, salvation, the kingdom of God, and how such<br />

Old Testament themes find their fulfillment in the ministry and message of Christ in the New<br />

Testament gospels. Fulfills one of the theology general education requirements.<br />

THEO 122 The Church and <strong>Christian</strong> Traditions (3)<br />

Spring<br />

Building upon Theology 121, this course is a study of the beginning of the <strong>Christian</strong> Church since<br />

Pentecost, the expansion of the Church, the New Testament Epistles and eschatology, and a study<br />

of the major <strong>Christian</strong> traditions, their historical backgrounds, and their beliefs and practices, and<br />

stance toward culture. Fulfills one of the theology general education requirements.<br />

THEO 221 Biblical Literature: the Pentateuch (3)<br />

Fall<br />

The Pentateuch (Genesis through Deuteronomy) is considered as the foundational document for<br />

both the Old and New Testaments. The main emphasis is placed on the content of these books<br />

and the relationship that they sustain with the rest of the Bible. Brief consideration is given to the<br />

problem of the Documentary Hypothesis, Form Criticism, and the Mosaic authorship of these<br />

books. Prerequisite: Theology 121.<br />

THEO 222 Biblical Literature: Historical Books (3)<br />

Fall, Even<br />

An investigation of the nature of biblical historiography as kerygmatic and of the principles for<br />

understanding the Bible’s historical writings, especially the books of Joshua through II Kings.<br />

Prerequisite: Theology 121.<br />

THEO 223 Biblical Literature: Wisdom Books (3)<br />

Fall, Odd<br />

A study of the content of Old Testament wisdom literature: Job, Ecclesiastes, Proverbs, Song of<br />

Solomon, and some of the Psalms. Students examine the structure, setting, and the literary forms<br />

that characterize this literature. The role of wisdom in biblical revelation and in <strong>Christian</strong> life is<br />

also discussed. Prerequisite: Theology 121.<br />

THEO 224 Biblical Literature: the Prophets (3)<br />

This study seeks an understanding of the nature of prophecy, the historical setting of the<br />

prophets, and the relationship between prophecy and fulfillment. Primary emphasis is upon the 12<br />

minor prophets, Hosea through Malachi. Prerequisite: Theology 121.
