I fhall do thefe three things.<br />

I. Shew you, that Baptifm is to be adminiftredlby Dipping,<br />

Plunging, or overwhelming the Perfon in Water.<br />

II. That true penitent Believers are the right Subjefts<br />

of Baptifm.<br />

III. That the Ordinance of Baptifm is now m being,<br />

and is to continue to the End of this World.<br />

I. I (hall (hew that Baptifm muft be adminiftred by<br />

Dipping, &c. if we confider thefe four things.<br />

1. The Etymology, or Signification of the Word, the<br />

Holy Spirit ufes to exprefs it by.<br />

2. Tliofe Metaphors ufed in Holy Scripture, to reprcfent<br />

it to our Underftanding.<br />

3. From the Prafticeof thefirft Baptizers.<br />

4. From the grand Commiflion of our Saviour, Mat,<br />

I. From the Etymology, or Signification of the Word.<br />

The word Baptifmy is from the Greek ^a^iCo^ to dip.<br />

Baptifna, a Dipping ; from /BaVTs, B:ipto, to dip, plunge,<br />

or drown. It <strong>im</strong>plieth the wafhing of the whole Body j<br />

even fuch a wafhing as is ufed in Bucks, where Linen is<br />

plunged and dipt. For the native and proper fignification<br />

of it, is to dip into Water, or to plunge under Water 5<br />

fee Liigh^ Critica Sacra.<br />

It is a Metaphor taken from the ufe of the Dyers Vat *,<br />

and is fuch a Dipping, by which the Cloth put into it is<br />

d>ed, and not a bare wafhing only i<br />
