I live at 375 South End Avenue and have lived in BPC for twenty years and would like to voice my very strong support for Commodore Fortenbaugh who has been an excellent steward of the marina. The level of his business acumen is evident when one remembers the scarce number of boats visiting the marina before he took over—it was indeed a sad spectacle to see all the empty berths and lack of activity. The marina is now a vibrant and lively space filled with mega-yachts, interesting teaching vessels and sailing boats servicing the delighting the local community. His generosity to the community is unrivaled and must be strongly considered when making the choice of who will operate the marina. Commodore Fortenbaugh has done a wonderful job of looking after my ‘backyard.’ - Maryna Lansky restored the marina to full working order and continued to maintain it in excellent condition; repaired the entire marina electrical system after Hurricane Sandy to the sum of $500,000 and at no expense to BPCA; invested $930,000 in the improvement of floating docks and other equipment; increased the volume of yachts visiting the marina so that we now operate at near 100% capacity much of the boating season; managed the marina in a successful manner which has brought credit to BPCA and enhanced the value of all surrounding real estate; managed the marina in a manner which integrated the community and won the support of the vast majority of people who live or work in BPC. Fostered and promoted an unprecedented number of recreational programs which connected the public to the harbor, including kids and adult sailing lessons here in Lower Manhattan. For the past 10 years, North Cove Marina Management has been very successful by almost every standard of measurement. A-10. I am a native New Yorker. When I was growing up in this city in the 1950s, I didn't have a chance to experience the joy of sailing or of learning to sail. When I left New York as an adult, friends took me sailing in Chicago (Lake Michigan) and Boston (Salem Sound), where I learned the art and science of this wonderful activity. I became a boat owner and charterer in these other cities. I taught my children to sail in these other cities. Then, as luck would have it, I returned to the city of my birth and learned of the Manhattan Sailing Club. For the past fifteen years, I have been a member of this outstanding Club. For the past four years, I have been a boat owner, where Ajax, my J/105, is resident at North Cove Marina. These have been some of the most enjoyable years of my life. I race and cruise my J/105 sail boat in New York Harbor. Lake Michigan and Salem Sound are fine places to sail. However, New York Harbor is in a class by itself. Here, I participate in social activities and camaraderie sponsored by my Club. I support the New York Harbor Foundation, donating my boat to the New York Harbor Regatta at Governor's Island event just last month. I take my grandchildren sailing. As they get older, I hope to have them learn to sail under the auspices of the Manhattan Sailing Club. It is hard to imagine my life without the Manhattan Sailing Club or North Cove Marina as they are currently structured. - Zachary Fluhr A-11. North Cove Marina Management Inc. has operated and developed North Cove marina for the past 10 years. BPCA is familiar with our management and many current and former employees of BPCA can attest to our responsiveness to issues and quality of our operations. A-12.
