My wife and I have been residents of Battery Park City for the last twenty years. We have raised two children in BPC who are now almost thirteen years old. The marina and Sailing Club have been an integral part of our lives. I have walked around the North Cove Marina with my children countless times, pointing at the mega-yachts that now visit the marina. We have personally witnessed the improved facilities at North Cove Marina and have enjoyed seeing a vibrant and wellmaintained marina since North Cove Marina Management took over operations. My children also attend the local schools and we have seen the generous donations that North Cove Marina Management has made over the years. As sailors and residents of Battery Park City, the Picone family fully supports North Cove Marina Management and is hopeful that such high-quality services and events, as well as professional staff, continue to manage North Cove Marina. Clipper Round the World Race Another international event which NCMM has secured for North Cove for the past 6 years is the Clipper Round the World Race. This is a competition for twelve 72-foot boats which stop at major ports while racing around the world. What is unique about this event is that average people can buy a spot on the boat to participate. Many people sail one or more legs as a way to get the ultimate experience of their lives. The Clipper Race came to New North through Commodore Fortenbaugh’s connection with Sir Robin Knox-Johnston. The Commodore convinced Sir Robin to move the start of Around Alone, the single-handed round the world race, to New York in 2002. - Michael, Margarita, Alexander & Lauren Picone Once NCMM was put in charge of North Cove, we also secured the Clipper Race which had previously docked in Jersey City. This year, the 65
Clipper fleet spent part of their time in New Jersey to keep costs down and to do maintenance. Then the fleet moved over to North Cove for several days before the start for maximum visibility and exposure. As a longtime resident of Lower Manhattan I want to express my strong support for you and the Manhattan Sailing School to continue to manage North Cove. Your proven commitment to the community and the special brand of goodwill with which you and your staff handle the sailing school and other operations there are instrumental in making it the special hub of maritime activity that is a very special part of the neighborhood. Your hands-on approach would not be duplicated by another manager. - Caroline Press The public around North Cove loves when these great sailing events come calling. The boats are filled with flags and activity. These races fill the marina with a warm and welcoming atmosphere. The events also bring lots of participants and spectators into the city from around the world. This spurs the local economy by booking hotel rooms as well as filling restaurants and sending customers to local stores. 66
