Commodore Fortenbaugh flew out to San Francisco with the Clipper Challenge Cup to present it to Giovanni and his crew when they reached dock. Michael’s management of North Cove Marina combines this truly extraordinary and inclusive sailing program with a high-end urban marina that attracts some of the world’s largest super-yachts. North Cove is a precious resource to New York City and Michael Fortenbaugh, over the last ten years, has been an excellent steward of the Cove. Along with many other supporters, I am hopeful that Michael will have the opportunity to run North Cove for another ten years. -Gareth Gaston Soldini races his 70-foot monohull with an international crew. He has also made two trans-Atlantic record attempts starting from North Cove. Another great record setting boat stopping by North Cove was IDEC skippered by Francis Joyon. Joyon was the first great adventurer to stay at North Cove when we began managing the marina in 2005. 69
We want in this letter to express our gratitude for these years of achievements in building and managing the North Cove Marina. You put New York back on the map of the great sailing cities. We don’t see any other large capital in the world having developed so successfully a sailing center. We fully support your vision and the execution of it over the years and sincerely think you are the only person with the right management skills to continue to develop the marina and the sailing activities in North Cove in harmony with the surrounding community. -HP Beauchesne & Jenny Corless Joyon made two attempts at the Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Record. On the second try, he also smashed the record, pushing himself so hard that he collapsed after crossing the finish line. His boat went onto the rocks but Joyon managed to revive and crawled off alive. He then had a new boat built and continues his pursuit of all the great sailing records around the world. Joyon visited North Cove again in 2013. Other famous sailors have included Ellen MacArthur on B&Q Castorama and Thomas Coville on Sodebo. These are the type of events with NCMM has demonstrated the desire to create and the ability to make happen. No other marina in the harbor is doing events of this magnitude. 70
