The Marina and the work that you do has improved the quality of life not only in Battery Park, but also has been a major factor in the ‘revival’ of our downtown, making it one of the most sought after neighborhoods in all of Manhattan for residence and business alike. I would like to personally thank you for making all of these possibilities a reality for us every day. You are certainly one of the best neighbors and I look forward to you continuing your ongoing work with our community. - Jawna Standish KRYS Ocean Race Another ground breaking race attracted by NCMM was the KRYS Ocean Race in 2012. This was for a fleet of 70- foot trimarans. The race was from NYC to Brest. This was the first major ocean race connecting New York City to France. To win this event for NYC, NCMM had to negotiate with the organizesr and convince them of the benefits of starting in New York City rather than Newport, RI. 67
I am writing to express my support for the current management of North Cove Marina. Hopefully the incredible work of our neighbor, Michael Fortenbaugh, will be rewarded by the renewal of his contract to operate the marina and continue the wonderful programs he has developed for our community and other New Yorkers’ enjoyment. Under Michael Fortenbaugh’s stewardship, the North Cove Marina has flourished. Michael hires and cultivates amazing employees. It’s impressive that the caliber of his staff is so consistently high. It’s rare to find a group of people who are so professional, while remaining friendly, enthusiastic and helpful. - Kathy Hansen Record Attempts North Cove has also been the starting point for many great record attempts. Because of the public interest these sailors generate, NCMM sometimes gives them discounted or free dockage. The most recent example was the famous Italian sailor Giovanni Soldini who shattered the New York to San Francisco record in early 2014. Giovanni set sail from North Cove on New Year’s Day 2014. He sailed down the coast of North and South America, rounded Cape Horn and then continued up to San Francisco where he smashed the old record. 68
