gilbert sardier of Clermont-Ferrand, the present Representative of the French<br />

National Association of Aces, was born in Riom ( Puy-de-D6me ) on May 5, 1897.<br />

(A graduate of the Faculte de Droit of Paris, he has for many years been associated<br />

with the La Nationale assurance company, and is the author of a number<br />

of books on aviation<br />

and space travel.)<br />

With the Mobilization in August 1914, Sardier entered the<br />

Chasseurs d'Afrique.<br />

Like the rest of the cavalry troops he was unhorsed by the stagnation of the<br />

trench war and began to consider aviation as a means of getting back into the war<br />

and out of the mud. Toward the end of 1915, he was accepted for flying training<br />

and was sent to Pau to begin the standard "Bleriot school" instruction.<br />

Cyr he won his military pilot's brevet in a Caudron G.3 in April 1916.<br />
