10 MINUTES OF THE 1997 SYNOD OF THE David Carson Jack Lathom Bob McFarland Dennis Wing, Chairman Following the announcements Synod was led in prayer by the Moderator adjourning the court at 10:15 p.m. MONDAY, JULY 14, 1997, 8:30 A.M. Synod reconvened pursuant to adjournment in the Yates College Union on the campus of William Jewell College, Liberty, Missouri on Monday, July 14, 1997 at 8:30 a.m. The Moderator welcomed the delegates reminding them of the sovereignty of God in their work. James Carson led in prayer constituting the court. The roll was passed. Walter (Kit) Swartz led Synod in the singing of Psalm 98B. Don Piper read Exodus 32:30-32 and preached God's Word on the theme, "Committed to One Another". He then closed the service in prayer. The minutes of the Saturday evening session were read and approved as read. Elders who are delegates without certification were seated as regular delegates to the Synod. Others elders present were seated as consultative members of the court. The Moderator announced the committees to be assigned by him as follows: COMMITTEES APPOINTED BY THE MODERATOR Judicial Committee: Bill Edgar, Ch., Godfrey Franklin, Phil Pockras, Ed Schisler, George Hueber. Nominating Committee: Glen Chin, 1 year, Drew Gordon, 1 year, Kit Swartz, 2 years; Ed Hindman, 2 years; Timothy McCracken, Bruce Hemphill, Chairman. Resolution of Thanks: Stan Copeland, Ch., Francis Buck. State of the Church Committee: Ron Good, Ch., Tony Cowley, Don Piper. Special Committee on Paper 97-3 on a Revision of the Psalter: Ray Joseph, Ch., Barry York, Peter Smith. COMMITTEES TO REVIEW PRESBYTERY RECORDS Alleghenies: Andrew Schep, John McFarland, Joe Copeland. Atlantic: Christian Adjemian, John McMillan, Alan Noell Great Lakes - Gulf: Jonathan Leach, Wade Mann, Scott McBurney. Japan: Keith Black, Doug Comin, John Russell.
REFORMED PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH OF NORTH AMERICA 11 Midwest: Paul Martin, Karl Stoicheff, Dave Long. Pacific Coast: Ed Blackwood, D. Ray McCracken, Glen George St. Lawrence: Mark England, Kenneth Orr, Larry Bump The report of the Business of Synod Committee on Communications was taken up again. Items 8-10 were adopted and are as follows: Communication 97-8: Declaration concerning "Psalm Choruses". Recommendation ft 8: that Communication 97-8 be referred to the Committee to Revise the Directory for Worship, and to report to the Synod of 1998. Communication 97-9: Petition to Deal with the American Presbyterian Churches. Recommendation tt 9: that Communication 97-9 be returned to the Atlantic Presbytery on the following grounds: 1) the paper was not in an acceptable form to be received by Synod; 2) procedures for congregations joining the RPCNA are outlined in the Directory for Church Government. Any orall of the American Presbyterian Churches are free to follow these; 3) the Interchurch Committee is proposing a different direction than this paper. Communication 97-10: Covenant with the Japan Presbytery Recommendation ft 10: that Communication 97-10 be referred to a committee of three elders to consult with Pastor Takiura and representatives of the Foreign Mission Board, and to report to this meeting of Synod. The Moderator announced the committee to meet with Pastor Takiura and representatives of the FMB as follows: Ed Robson, Christopher Wright, Charles Leach. Item 5 from the Business of Synod Committee on the disposition of the 1996 reports was taken up and adopted. The reports appear in Appendix A to the Minutes. Following announcements, Synod took recess at 9:30 a.m. MONDAY JULY 14, 1997, 1:30 P.M. Synod re-convened at 1:30 p.m. being led in prayer by Samuel E. Boyle. The roll was passed. The minutes of the morning session were read and approved. Lt. Col. Tom Vann was introduced to the court. Chaplain Vann is present to answer questions regarding the armed forces chaplaincy. Mark Harrington from Lincoln, Nebraska, was introduced to the Synod as a fraternal delegate representing the Orthodox Presbyterian Church.
