Membership of the Business of Synod Committee.
The terms of Robert Copeland and Drew Gordon expire at this meeting of
Synod. Their positions must be filled. Both were elected in 1995 to fill the
positions of men who were unable to serve. Both are also eligible for reelection.
RECOMMENDATION #4: that the vacancies on the Committee be filled.
ADDENDUM TO THE BUSINESS OF SYNOD COMMITTEE REPORT
A few items have come to the attention of the Business of Synod Committee at
this meeting of Synod that we believe need to be addressed.
RECOMMENDATION #5: that the reports published in the 1996 Digest of
Reports be received for information and printed in the Appendix to the Minutes.
Board to Address Disability Concerns
It has come to the attention of the Business of Synod Committee that there is
some confusion over the relationship of this Board to the Synod. The Business of
Synod Committee would direct the court to the following records from the
Minutes of the 1994 Synod - Report from the Committee to Address Disability
Concerns {Minutes, page 100) and the Report from the Business of Synod
Committee (Minutes, page 69 and 70).
The Board to Address Disability Issues was never established as a Board of the
Synod, but as a Board under the jurisdiction of the Reformed Presbyterian
Woman's Association.
The representatives of the Business of Synod Committee will meet with
representatives of the Board and the Woman's Association to help this Board
better understand its relationship with the Synod and to offer help and
encouragement as to how they can best serve the church in light of this
relationship. The Business of Synod Committee will also keep the Trustees of
Synod informed of our progress.
Overture from 1994 Synod.
In researching the above issue,it was pointed out to the Business of Synod
Committee that there was a change to the RP Testimony passed by the 1994
Synod that was to go down in overture. This never happened.
RECOMMENDATION # 6: that the matter of the 1994 change to the RP
testimony, which should have gone down in overture, be referred to the Business
of Synod Committee to report to the 1998 Synod. (The Business of Synod
Committee is investigating the matters relating to overtures, as to what matters
need to be sent down in overture and which ones do not. We hope to have
recommendations on this at the 1998 Synod.)
Transmission of Communications to the Synod.
One of the communications received by the Synod this year was widely
distributed via e-mail. The Business of Synod Committee has worked hard to
develop a reasonable means for the reception of papers by Synod. Even though
